Hey mods--
We already have a stickied thread to group/collect/track all the wonderful tips, techniques, and tools for the customizing trade in this forum, right? Well, I've recently begun to notice a growing interest in Joe Fandom in the art of restoring old vehicles and figures. With this growing interest in a new segment of the hobby that is decidedly DIFFERENT and altogether separate from customizing, I was wondering if we could get a thread going to collect the tips, techniques, warnings, cautions, suggestions, and tools for restoring vintage vehicles and figures?! PLEASE! I know we have a lot of guys on here already who have so many good ideas and a lot of practice, but it's a hassle trying to track down each individual separate artist's suggestions and projects. Thanks, guys! Post away...add it in this thread if you think it will help. KEEP THIS THREAD ON TOPIC, ABSOLUTELY NO SPAM. ^

Sorry if this is in the wrong place. I recently picked up about 20 joes from back home that I played with as a kid. Unfortunately they are so old certain elements have broken. Is there a generally good place to buy... I think I can buy all these figures again but the wornness of them is pretty awesome and will be great to display.
1) O-rings (are all the same size/quality?) 2) The little bar holding the the legs together. I thought it was metal BUT my dang destro's bar broke!

Smalljoes has o-rings that are 100% for vintage Joes. I bought some o-rings for them for my vintage Joes and Oktober Guards.

Guys what is the best paint to retouch ARAH o-ring figures? I can safely assume gloss paint in most cases. Any suggestions as to brand???? Tamiya, P3, Testors, citadel ETC.??????

I've found the best paint for touching up figures is Testor's Acrylic Modle Master paint. Tamiya is good, but is fussy to work with. Testors can be thinned with water, Tamiya, you will need to use ispoprpyl alcohol. Be careful with Tamiya, if you paint it too thick, it will clump, or tear through the layers, best to do one coat, let dry and repeat if needed. Clean your brushes with Windex, or any cheap window cleaner with ammonia, then rinse them with water, adn maybe soem liquid soap if needed.

Removing paint from botched/unfinished customs:
Simple Green concentrate. Soak the parts for a day, or more for stubborn paint, then scrub with a toothbrush. Use a toothpick or sharpened chopstick for crevices. Simple Green removes acrylic, enamel and spray paint without damaging GI Joes, or the factory paint. ARAH Figures. Nearly new, no damage to factory paint. Modern Joes. Like it never happened. 97 Joes. No damage to paint, but may be damaged by the scrubbing. Matchbox Robotech figures. Factory paint comes off with scrubbing, not recomended unless doing a full repaint. Last edited by Zarana X; 03-14-2013 at 03:40 PM.. |
