We all remember this thread right? http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...o-tempted.html Well, Hiss Tank member Sirt8669 actually flew out and bought the whole collection! In the collection was a Defiant. Sirt notified me and after looking at it for a while, I finally picked it up last night. It is in pretty good shape. Hell, even the crank works! It is missing some pieces but we hope to find them in his storage. Anything not there will likely be trade for or bought from eBay. Anyways, I am in love with the vehicle and wanted to do a restoration on it. KEEP IN MIND- I am not looking to resell it in the future. I am going to keep this for as long as I"m around. So I will be putting aftermarket/ replacement stickers on it, as well as painting it. Some of the paint apps will be to bring out the detail in the shuttle, booster and crawler. Will this hurt the value? I'm not sure. But this isn't about the value of it, it is about having the nicest Defiant possible in my collection. I will be working on this for quite a while so feel free to check in whenever I post. Also, feel free to ask questions. This is basically going to be a "How To Guide" of sorts. It will help you with any problems of taking it apart, cleaning it, where to buy stickers, etc. Also, the Crusader is nearly identical to the Defiant shuttle, so the techniques shown for the shuttle will work with the Crusader too.

The first thing I did after acquiring the Defiant was to go online and get some replacement stickers. I used Defiant (series) : Cobra Stickers, Replacement and restoration stickers for classic G.I. Joe vehicles. but others do make replacement stickers too. I prefer Cobra Stickers because not only are they top quality but they are pre cut, making it easier to apply them. But remember, they are in Canada so it usually takes about 10-14 days to receive them. That leaves plenty of time to work on the Defiant.
Next, it is time to disassemble the shuttle. This not only makes it easier to clean and paint, but it also keeps the screws from getting wet and eventually rusty. The main body is held on by 7 phillips head screws. You will need a bit of a long screwdriver to reach inside. The red circles in the picture below show where the screws are located. Note that you must remove the nosecone in order to access the screw underneath. The nosecone just pops off.

After removing the screws, the shuttle comes apart in 2 halves. The remaining grey interior pieces just slide out. The guns also just pop off. You should be left with something like this-

Each wheel on the rear landing gear is held on by 4 clips. Be careful when removing them, as the plastic is about 24 years old. Just pull off two clips from one side, then slide the assembly up on that side (so the clips can't fall back into place) then pull the other two back and the gear slides right out.

The next step is to remove all the stickers. Mine came right off due to being so old. Some are a little tougher and might require a bit more work.
After the stickers are removed, take all the pieces and give them a good scrubbing. I put mine in the bathtub because it would easily hold all the big parts. I took a cleaning pad and dish soap and scrubbed the crap out of them. This helps remove any dirt, grease, oil and even some stains and yellowing. Be careful around the glass pieces. You can use the rough side of the pad to clean the shuttle (light scratches will actually be filled by the paint later on) but if you hit the clear plastic pieces it WILL scratch them and there's pretty much no going back.

Next, rinse the parts thoroughly and let them dry. I put mine outside on a towel so they would dry faster. None of my neighbors are collectors so I know they're safe out there

So you just use soap and water to get the stains out of the white?

It won't remove all the stains. It can remove light stains (it's hard to see in the pictures). Say for instance something was spilled on it years ago and never quite cleaned properly.

I tried spray bleach! It worked very well, although it stank to high heaven! Peroxide on the smaller parts is great too!
