Guillermo Del Toro has a new movie in the works and I was surprised that he would take on this idea; "Pacific Rim" is a giant monster/robot movie set to come out summer of '13, here is the synopsis...
“When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.” Besides being a cool concept for a movie (loves me some giant monster movies!) apperantly Guy Davis, artist for the Hellboy spinoff comic "BPRD" is doing some of the concept art while sculptor Simon Lee "spiderzero" Simon Lee Spiderzero Sculptor - BigBlueTree.com - Creature Designer SpiderZero Big Blue Tree Spider Zero Garage Kit Simon Spiderzero Lee will be working on the physical maquette sculpts. Both these artists are capable of some amazing stuff so to have them both working together on this has me really excited. Since the fall-through with Del Toro's Lovecraft project, "At the Mountains of Madness" this may be the closest we will get to having some big screen Eldrich monstrosities for a while.

Guy Davis is a great artist and a very cool guy. I have bought a few pieces from him, that and I am very interested in checking this one out.

Yeah..I think this is as close to a true western Godzilla/giant monster movie that we may ever get..as Hollywood will never get Godzilla I'm betting.

Something else I thought was interesting was that it had been announced a while back that a movie of Monsterpocalypse (a game put out by Privateer Press) had been optioned for a movie. Monpoc is pretty much this concept already but last I heard was that Tim Burton had been approached to direct which I thought was an odd choice. It seems like when Hollywood releases one type of movie there are at least 2 others that are similarly themed right on the heels of it so who knows, maybe this could be the beginning of a giant monster movie wave?

I'm really looking forward to this. I love all of Del Toro's movies. He's got a great style. I think we're supposed to get a trailer during the Super Bowl.
And we will be getting a Godzilla movie in 2014. Godzilla Stomps Into Theaters on May 16, 2014! - ComingSoon.net Can't wait for that one! Some site had some footage from the sequel to the Korean movie "The Host" up the other day too. That wasn't bad either. |

The first was OK, but I wasn't getting the cool movie vibe everyone else was ranting about. Doesn't mean I wont see the sequel though.

Pacific Rim has an official web site up with a gallery that includes a look at the Jaegers'.
Pacific Rim Movie Gallery Also, an official trailer will be released on Dec. 12, 2012. So in about 9 days we should see some footage. Edit: Also found some teasers for it, in one it looks like they were using footage from the US "GINO" Godzilla movie. http://www.pacificrimmovie.net/news/viral-round-up/ Although it looks more like fan stuff it's still kinda cool that people are getting into the spirit of it.

I'm a little disappointed to hear that the Lovecraft project has stalled. At the Mountains of Madness would make an excellent film. That is, if you don't consider the fact that both versions of The Thing, and the fist Alien movie are essentially a re-working of Lovecraft's story.
