While they may not make action figures, Games Workshop posted a behind the scenes vid dealing with their production facilities. One of the things that I thought might interest some is the section where they show them working on the metal molds. Whenever someone talks about "molds" and "tooling" in some of the other threads this is pretty close to what it means.

There's a brief shot of a guy sculpting with a three point articulated haptic arm made by Sensable. That's the equipment I use for my job. And the shot of the red print emerging from the resin vat? That's the same process I printed my Larry Hama custom head with, called perfactory printing. It can vary from 20 to 50 micron layers.

20-50 microns is pretty intense, is that the system that fires lasers into a vat of resin?

They can be, it depends on what kind of production the piece is going to go into. Some of what GW does is on computer but their traditional way is doing something called a "3 Up" where they sculpt the object 3 times the size it will eventually become. This is supposed to ensure there are no details that might get stuck in the mold. Gyre-Viper posted a video interview with Bill Merklein (sculptor of G.I. Joe ARAH figures) and he talked about sculpting the figures at twice the size of what they would be produced at.
In the miniature business if it goes into pewter or resin production it usually has to be sculpted at whatever size it is going to be produced at so a lot of those metal miniatures you saw the casters pulling off the sprues and dropping into the box were sculpted at that size.

Whoa! 3D stuff is something I keep meaning to get into but ZBrush is a bit intense to start off with especially if you have no experience with previous programs. I recently got a little info about the Sensable stuff from another sculptor who works primarily in putty and managed to pull of a pretty decent mini on his first try. Just can't afford the equipment.
20-50 microns is pretty intense, is that the system that fires lasers into a vat of resin? Yep, two lasers are fired into a vat of resin, and a metal plate moves upwards out of the resin, the lasers tracing round the shape of whatever is being printed. What you see in the GW video is regular perfactory resin, but it can also print in ceramic resin. The level of detail in perfactory printing is insanely good, if you want to see more pics of perfactory, gimme a shout! |

ZBrush is intense, and kinda hard to get into. It's a great program for organic shapes and texturing, but a bit difficult to do mechanical stuff with. Freeform is up to version 11 now, it's great to do both mechanical and organic stuff, but the software and especially the hardware is super expensive. I would not have the chance to use it if not for work. I started sculpting in epoxy putty and paraffin based waxes, but now do pretty much all my work on Freeform.
