I never had a Dragonfly XH-1 until last year, and even then, it wasn't the V1 release. I got the Desert Pink version called the Locust XH-1 from 2000 GI Joe A Real America Hero Collection. You guys may remember it. Came with a Wild Bill repaint.
Anyways back in the day I wanted the Tiger Fly, never got it, so experiencing the XH-1 mold for the 1st time was awesome. It's so fun to play with! Yes play. It's durable enough, but I could definitely see Hasbro making all new tooling for it to make it near-indestructable. Like enough to knock someone unconscious if smacked by it from the side. The rotors on earlier releases looked floppy compared to mine from auctions I've seen, so I'm guessing the 2000 release was retooled with rotors made of a firmer material. It also has a wing from the Street Fighter GI Joe release that has a peg for a missle launcher yet the 2000 release does not come with said launcher. Oh well. It was rumored to come back from 2009-2010, Hasbro mentioned it in the Q&A but it never surfaced. Womp womp. If it returned, I would surely buy another. I would love for Hasbro to modernize it, base it on the AH-1Z Viper that the Marines use, with 4 rotor blades for the main rotor instead of 2. I'm pretty sure Hasbro's GI Joe budget isn't all that big so the 4 rotor blades would suffice. I would also like to see a repaint in grey like the Marines version. The NAC was an attack chopper with transport capability and somewhat of a stealth aesthetic. It is one of the VERY FEW vehicles from 2002-06 that I think is actually good, and one of the rare GI Joe toys from 02-06 that ACTUALLY has likeable gimmicks imho. Even the dreaded "Sound Attack" gimmick of the time worked well on this as the plug-in weapon was another BFG, which made sense for a gunship. For Wild Bill this was one hell of a modernized ride. Looks awesome, very fun to play with, and built like a freaking tank. You can probably use this as a bat while playing baseball. I can't recommend it enough. I bought mine for $30+ back in the day and it was worth it. Not sure why Hasbro never opted to re-release this for the 25th line as not only is it a great 02-06 vehicle; imo it's one of the best GI Joe vehicles ever made period. Now just for fun, if Hasbro were to reissue the Dragonfly or NAC, which would you want? Let's say they could only reissue 1, for the 50th anniversary line or some retailer exclusive a while later. I don't even know if Hasbro has the tooling/molds anymore. I would imagine they would as the NAC mold was used for the CCC as late as 04-05 and the Dragonfly tooling was last used in 2001 IIRC. The NAC is built like a tank, there's no retooling necessary as it is difficult to break to begin with(hefty too!). The Dragonfly is sturdy but Hasbro would most likely make a new mold based on the original. Let's not debate which one Hasbro would reissue or the probability. Let's have fun. This is about which one YOU would want if you could ONLY choose 1 to return. Discuss! |

Though the original Dragonfly XH-1 is cool (I had one when I was a kid), I think the NAC was a totally awesome design, one of the best vehicles from the new-sculpt era. It is also more of an offensive vehicle compared to the Tomahawk, which I see as being more of a "workhorse" chopper.
Really either vehicle would be great though. |

I have both and I love both, for different reasons. Personally, I'd love to see an upgraded/modernized Dragonfly though, with the modifications Shin mentioned.

I'm actually surprised the Dragonfly is winning this round. I myself have yet to vote.

Dragonfly is more iconic to GI Joe for me.

I don't have one, though as a somwhat minor quibble I don't like the crazy rotors on the NAC. I do like it's overall design as a heavy assault chopper. GeneralsJoes says it can seat five (4+ the pilot) comfortably, which appears to be less than the Tomahawk, and it appears better armed.
If they dropped some of the gimmicks this would be great. However... I would prefer a remold of the Dragonfly as long as it's a twin-seater that has better flexability to fit modern era figures than the vintage mold does. I had an original Dragonfly and loved it, and moreso it fits my fleet better given the NAC's capabilities overlaps the Tomahawk's more, and we know we're getting the Eaglehawk. I prefer getting a light attack chopper rather than another transport/assault craft.

I am on the fence about this. I still have my original Dragonfly and it was a killer vehicle (in some cases almost literally, if you got the rotor going real good those rubber tips would fly off at great speed) But, it's been released and re released a lot so far, I would like to see something a bit harder to get a hold of make it to the stores again. I never did get the NAC (Heh, I be funny) and it's really been piquing my interest of late but I have issues with some of it's aesthetics though which has prevented me from taking the plunge. I really do not like the handle on the tail, stuff like that has always reminded me of Playschool toys. There is something about the rotor design that bugs me, not sure what. I do love the armaments on it, it's a massive weapons platform and is more of a troop transport then I would have initially thought.
I don't know, a cool classic or a harder to find vehicle?

The Dragonfly was one of the first Joe toys I got when I was little. I would figuratively MAIM for a faithful modern update. I've got a vintage one and a Locust in a bin... with a NAC, which is as about as awesome as toys get. I don't see that as needing an update. Dragonfly wins!

Dragonfly = iconic
NAC = super cool & awesome Sadly, I have to go with the iconic choice. The NAC is a lot more fun, but... the Dragonfly is almost a character all its own!
