Growing up in the US, Joe was a very American toy and the possibility that kids outside of the US were playing with them never entered my mind. It wasn't until later I saw pics of the Japanese releases of the Joes and their card art that I suddenly realized that the toy was global and at the time I found it odd that another country would want to purchase a toy that had such heavy American themes. Still later I found out about Action Force and that the UK had their own theme for the Joes and on top of that they had toys that weren't released in the US. Since I've been on the Tank I see we got people all over the world who are fans and grew up with the toys but I wanted to ask; what was Joe to you as a kid? Outside of the US how were the toys portrayed? Were they still the Americans doing their "Team America World Police" thing or were they more a global peace force made up of members from all countries? Or were they a force created by your home country to protect the world? Just what were the Joes to you?

I only view them as US. A Real American Hero. I am a US citizen so that is expected. I would like to add that I hate the "International" force portrayed in the G.I. Joe movie. Just my opinion.

The toys in Canada had Canadian flag stickers but since in Canada we're exposed to so much American culture I think it really didn't have an effect.

My view of them is they are a strictly American team but they do help in international situations.

I do view Cobra as an international group with different bases and operatives all over the world.

Early Action Force stuff for us was far more militant and aggressive than the GI Joe comics and cartoons that were released in the US. With the change over to GI Joe in all but name in 85/86 we caught up on the Hama-verse, only to see a massive drop off with the Cobra-La influence from the cartoon movie, and the influx of the day-glo coloured and weirder figs like Raptor, Big Boa, and the Techno-Vipers.
This is the sort of thing that me and my schoolmates would watch in the late 70's early 80's; Which I think influenced a lot of our 'anti-terrorist play' when we were around 6 or 7!

I went through my entire childhood without having a clue that GI Joe existed elsewhere. I joined the tank about 4 years ago and was delighted to see people from other countries here as members, and got an education regarding the international figures. It seems like the Joe brand is fairly highly regarded in many parts of the world.

I grew up with G.I. Joe since 1985, and until recently, I viewed them as an all American unit. However, with the film's release, and taking current global themes into consideration, I think that the Joes being an American controlled unit with foreign members makes sense.
An organization like Cobra would be far reaching, and interspersed into every strata of modern society on every continent. An all-American team simply would not have the ability to go into some areas alone without foreign assistance and support ( as we currently operate). I for one would rather have foreign members on the Joes that I could trust and vouch for, than trust regular unit members from a foreign government that i might not completely trust. After all, Cobra is everywhere! |
