Hi! I want to try my hands at a custom contest, but I have no clue what I am doing.
What material would work best for molding facial detail onto a Joe head? Preferably for a vintage head? I just want to alter some facial features by molding directly onto the face. Really, I just want to add some facial hair and need to create the appropriate ridges underneath. Thanks for any help! I did spend some time searching through the tutorial threads first, but I either missed it or it's not there, and there's a lot to take in... |

I think you might mean sculpting instead of molding
If that's the case, I would suggest you use an epoxy like green stuff, plumbers putty or magic sculpt. You can find it at most hobby stores and it's really east to use.

Cool, thanks! I think I actually have some plumber's putty from when I had to fix our ghetto sink drain a few years ago.

I'd recommend Aves Apoxie Sculpt, it works great for "one off" sculptures

Check out the Bill Merklein interview that's posted on the front page of Hisstank, in the first two vid links he talks a bit about his process of sculpting using materials like magic sculpt. One problem you may have is the putty will want to stick to whatever tool you are using so you will have to use water or something like it to dip your tool in (Heh!) otherwise you could end up fighting the putty rather then sculpting with it.
