***STAFF EDIT***
In the future please do not use the "How to guide" prefix unless you are actually posting a how to guide....like a tutorial on something. For questions, please use the "questions" prefix. Thanks ! Hey everyone. I'm looking for a good clear coat to help seal and protect my custom work. I really want something durable as well as clear. Meaning it won't dull or gloss up my work. Also if it helps I usually use testers paints. |

I've learned that it's best to not use any. No matter what, it's going to fog over time. I've ruined a great deal of my best work by doing clearcoat.

It was suggested by another 'tanker that Mr Hobby Topcoat worked pretty good
Amazon.com: TOPCOAT Gundam Mr. Hobby Top Coat Flat NET 88ml. Spray: Toys & Games I tried it out and have had no problems. I've noticed that stuff like Mr Hobby, Tamiya and the Gundam line of hobby products seem to work better then others but ~Synder Corps.~ is right, a lot of brands will effect the look of the final product so I would test it out on something you don't care for before putting it on.

You could use PLAID Patricia Nimocks Decorative Crafts Clear Acrylic Sealer. It comes in Gloss and Matte (matte is good if you don't want a shine to the item, gloss is good for helmets) You can find them at any Michael's or AC Moore. Wait until your paint is fully dry on the figure and give a few lite coats from atleast six inches away. Mostly I use the matte clear sealer and then go over parts that I want glossy with Tamiaya clear gloss paint.

I've used Testors Dullcote and it's been great. Just spray a tiny bit once the paint is dried.

Awesome! Thanks guys. I also use the testers dull coat but gave found that it is kinda sticky and also it tends to flake off a little. So I assumed it wasn't a sealer and I needed to apply something else.

I use Testor's Flat clear Acryl. Works great. It's a brush on though, not a spray.

I used to use Testors but yes, it gets sticky and flakes away over time. I while back I switched to Krylon Crystal Clear and haven't had any problems. It is a little glossy but I kind of like to have a little factory-like sheen to my customs. I also noticed when I sprayed my Big Boa custom a second time it seemed to actually take away some of the sheen from the 1st spraying. I'll send you some links to pics of some of my customs I've used it on later. Im typing this from my phone.

Thanks cliffsteele I'd love to see the pics. I too am using the brush on kind but have used the krylon spray on my Gundam models and it's been great. I just know that the joes plastic is a little testy when it comes to painting and coating.

Make sure that you sand and wash the figure before painting, also it helps to use a good medium (Liquitix airbrush medium is what I use). This will help the paint bond to the figure and prevent flaking.
