Sunbow Best of the bunch, warts and all. This is the program I raced home from school every day to watch.
Renegades Great series. Great homage to Sunbow and the comics both. A shane Hasbro didn't support it like they did Transformers Prime. Resolute Very good on animation, and character designs. Very nice to see Joe and Cobra shooting actual bullets for once. But the story is terribly written and poorly executed, Storm Shadow was a bitch, and the ending was rushed. Valor vs. Venom Saw this once on television and it was ok if a little too kiddy for me. GI Joe Extreme I hated the figures, hated the characters, but I still watched this because it was all the GI Joe I had left. Spy Troops, dic, Sigma Six Never saw these

Renegades - It was a lot of fun to see my son fall in love with GI Joe watching this show. I enjoyed it as much as he did!
Sunbow - My favorite until Renegades arrived. Resolute - A very interesting interpretation. DIC - Not too bad! |

I didnt read all other comments, so I am not sure I am the only one, but my number one thing for grading is the art. I am old and really do not care for any sort of digital animation. I really appreciate pre-digital cartoons that were all animated by hand. Nothing tops well painted cell animation for me. That being said, I have a limited acceptance of digital animation-mainly because that's all I am going to get going forward. Anyway:
1. Sunbow- because of traditionally animated and the stories were well written, the voice acting for the most part was really good, especially by today's standards, and it was the original I still love it as much now as i did in the 80s when i was a kid! . 2. Resolute for the art and character designs. I thought the voice acting was terrible. ONE female for all female roles. White guys doing black characters also made me cringe. I dont know if some people dont know that it was originally aired as very short webisodes, so i imagine that is why the pacing is what it is. Someone said earlier in the thread that the commander died. I dont think that was the case. It ended very openly and i was so looking forward to a follow up, but i guess that's never going to happen. I was very disappointed Maj Bludd was killed off right off the bat. I have always hated Bazooka, so i was glad he was dead. I didnt like Scarlett at all. Her "attitude" was just overdone and annoying. Plus, i thought it was lame that she chose Duke over Snake Eyes. 3. Renegades. I think this really ties Resolute for me. I thought the story was really great. The characters were awesome and i think everything was pretty much excellent. A very worthy retelling or reboot. I didnt care for the style of the digitally rendered backgrounds. That is probably my biggest complaint-and the fact that Ripcord was once again turned into a black guy. (i have said this before, but i would be just as annoyed if they turned Doc or Stalker or any black character into a white guy). 4. Sigma 6. I saw only parts of a couple of episodes and didnt mind an anime take on the style. I thought it was fun at the time. I didnt really get a sense of the characters or any kind of story, so i cant comment on that. 5.Dic-HORRIBLE 6. I dont know if it was Extreme or if it was Sgt Savage that i saw, but it SUCKED BALLLLLLLSSSSSSSS I havent seen any other Joe animations *Edit: Gotta make Renegades #2. It's got more pros than cons when compared to Resolute, for me Last edited by necro; 02-07-2013 at 08:04 PM.. |

1. Sunbow - In the top echelon of animated series of the 1980s. Outstanding voice acting which defined the Joe characters as unique personalities better than any other Joe media ever has. The often non-stop action seemed ahead of its time in some ways. We didn't really start getting movies that action-intensive until the '90s. Perhaps best of all, this series had a sense of humor about itself with characters like the "Viper" and the Gamesmaster and lots of witty one-liners. Action movies take themselves too seriously now. The Sunbow Joe cartoon understood that the purpose of shows like this is to have fun. Many if not most of the episodes still hold up as good entertainment for someone in his 30s. I would love to see some of the best episodes reanimated with the exact same audio, since the main drawback on many episodes is some slipshod and underdetailed animation.
2. Renegades - A well-written take on the franchise with very good plot development. Drawbacks were odd-looking character designs and an effort to make characters more real-world style, losing the pulpy fun of some of the originals. The absolute low point was the new, so-called "Dr. Mindbender." Along with that, the voice-acting needed more punch, without the characters sounding so bored all the time. 3. Resolute - The best animation Joe's ever had but I don't recall the plot being all that interesting. 4. DIC - Take the worst episodes of the M.A.S.K. cartoon and recast them with Joe characters and you have this series. The pace was absolutely plodding and the ideas cornball. I haven't seen most of them, but the ones I have seen don't make me want to watch the rest. At least you get some of the Sunbow voices carried over, including the always delightful Cobra Commander. 5. and 6. Valor vs. Venom and Spy Troops - These were those CGI animated movies, right? I'm not even sure if I saw both of them. I remember them being stilted and awkward with poor storytelling techniques. Never saw Sigma Six, Sgt. Savage or Extreme. I never owned nor wanted any of those toys so I had no interest in the cartoons. Last edited by JediJones; 02-07-2013 at 08:11 PM.. |

I'll only rate the ones I've seen:
1. Sunbow 2. Renegades 3. Resolute Resolute is in 3rd place only because of how really short it was. |

1) Sunbow (it established how most of the characters are in my mind, & has influenced all Joe animations since in some way)
2) Renegades (for it's continuing story arcs) 3) Resolute (for being the only adult animation Hasbro produced in their now cancelled 5 year plan) 4) DIC (for the comedy & toy factor) 5) Sigma 6 (despite having the single worst episode of GI Joe ever made, & embarrassing it's animation studio Gonzo, it has some cool design work.) 5) VvV/Spy Troops (they have there moments) |
