I assume that they're in whatever the current modern era is--or at least a variation of the modern era--and that any anachronistically old costumes or gear is due to stylistic preference on the part of the user. I generally try not to think too hard about timelines, though, since that's a good way to get a headache.

My Joeverse is set in the 80's, and right now I am doing stories set in early 1987 (as far as who has joined the team).

I actually skip around, do now stories, stories I never got to or that were happening else where when I was a kid, and the time line as to what has gotten done and who's joined is actually 87 or 88, but then I will zip forward and use the new people like Mouse and Night Fox.

I keep mine in a slight future time. Nothing too flamboyant, about 5-10 years from now. It helps ease my mind the sci-fi aspect of the weaponry and some of the political aspects. And the original 80's line up for characters are now more like division commanders. They train up the younger recruits and take to the field when the need arises. This makes room for new characters in the same profession but allows me to keep the classics.

I tend to think of them as Modern- but my display is very ARAH ...I can't stand generic, realistic looking soldiers being called G.I.Joe- my team requires a unique style and flare to make the cut- how they look has to say "this is my personality" or "my MOS" - so by modern it's like "the near future" if today were 1980.... or something....

My Joe universe takes place in present day, but in an alternate universe from ours. I call it "Universe 1A" (we exist in universe 1, the A is for alternate). I have other parallel universes as well.
I account for their advanced age by the fact that GI Joe stole Dr. Mindbender's "Longevity Device" that reprograms the body's biological clock. So the main characters are 40-70 yrs. old, but are physically in their 30s. Cobra Commander is technically a clone of the original, who was killed by Snake Eyes in 2008. |

I actually use the time frame in which Joe was introduced to me, late 70's early 80's through early 90's. You figure covering the span of the better part over two decades, multiple movies, and story archs from the shows should be enough to mix it up for you right?
