VAllejo Paint is going to release a new line of paints called "Mecha Color" that may prove useful to customizers, here is the product description...
"Mecha Colors, a new range of airbrush colors, has been designed especially for painting robots, Gundam, Transformers and Gunplay figures. The innovative formulation of the colors, although water based, guarantees a maximum resistance to manipulation, impacts, friction, scratches and overall extreme wear. Once dry, the color appears the same as the injected plastic color. respecting all the details of the kit. Supplied in 17 ml. eye dropper bottles." The paints are a pre order right now but are supposed to be released this month and are running about $4 USD per bottle or a full set running a rough $300 USD for all 76 paint colors. I've pre-ordered a few as I hate joint rub and am always looking for products to combat this. I've been using Testors Model Masters acrylic but this new line of paints are supposed to be formulated for airbrush use and designed specifically for handling. This line also includes finishes, washes, primers and other interesting stuff for detailing. I've looked for news on the Vallejo site but it seems that only distributors have any real info on them yet, if you are interested Fantization Miniatures has them for order and you can see the full color range... Mecha Colors Paint Store Once I get my pre-order in I'll play around with the paints a bit and post here if they work as well as they say.

Thanks for the info, I'm fairly new to customizing figures, and I only use testors acrylic with a brush. Will this paint be good for brushing? Thanks

Wow!!! This would be awesome if it works. Then I would have to learn how to use an airbrush. Does anyone use an airbrush for their figs now? If so, how do you use it? Do you take the figure apart and tape off what you don't want painted? WIP pics and pics of the finished product would be cool to see.
Can't wait for your update Raven!!!

But if you use an airbrush the coverage is very smooth and clean looking, no brush marks.

Thanks for the airbrush tips Raven!!! Do you have to paint outside, or use a hood when indoors?

I paint indoors mostly and just use a piece of cardboard to catch any rogue sprays, I don't have the room for a station devoted to painting like an airbrush hood. There are some paints that require ventilation or even respiration aids like Alclad paints that specialize in metallics, that stuff can be dangerous so be sure to read the product descriptions before purchasing to make sure you know what you are getting into. So far with these Vallejo Mecha Colors paints there is nothing out of the ordinary for use, they are water based acrylics which is probably the least toxic paint I know of that is used in this hobby and they are normally easy to clean-up but we'll see how that works out with this new formula. I do my best to keep my airbrush clean between paint switches and I have a feeling it's going to be a good habit to keep up on with a paint that is claims to be tougher against handling then normal paint. Something like that could really gum-up the internals of an airbrush if left to dry inside the mechanism.
