Ok, time for my opinion.
My son, who is 8, plays modern warfare with my friends and I. He is on a kids account and only I can choose who he speaks/communicates with. He cannot add friends, get messages, or play games that I don't approve of. Is Modern Warfare a violent game? Hell yeah it is. But honestly, what were you doing when you were a kid. I was playing war outside with fake guns and building warzones inside with my army/gi joe figures. War is a young mans second nature. It's in the media, schools, and their genes. My son is also a straight A student and has limits on his online gaming time. I've told him from the get go, that if he doesn't keep his grades up, keeps his attitude in check, and doesn't participate in one sport, that he'll be off the games. He respects me and my wishes. He has a few friends on the game and I monitor their behaivoir also, as soon as they start crossing a line, they are removed from his friends list. I spend time with him on the game and off. We fish, hike, play, and have a great relationship. Parents just need to know their kids and take a minute to be a part of their lives. It's a fact that the average father spends 45 seconds a day talking to his son and that a son spends an average of 4 hours a day watching t.v. or gaming... there's the real problem. I love my son and he loves me, it's just imperritive that you be a good parent. As far as people using negative language and slang... I mute them. I like talking to my friends. If someone bothers me, I have the option to never hear from them again. Plain and simple. We need to hold ourselves accountable and stop blaming everyone else for our problems. Thanks for bearing with me...

Muting is all fine and good, but in a game like Hardcore SD communication is a strong part of the tactics of the game. If I have to mute the clowns on my team, there really isn't much point in even bothering.

The whole thing is a big mess.
What's stupid about it all is that people should know better. Being on the internet or online gaming or whatever doesn't mean "ability to be an asshole". Should treat people how you would if facing them in real life. If someone uses the anoynimity to be an ass, that's just sad and pathetic. I play games to have fun. My fun gets ruined by those asses. There's a reason I don't do online games and when I do an MMO I only socialize with people I know.

Like I tell my son, and like my parents told me. There's a time and place for everything. Do I swear like a sailor? Yes. Do I do it in front of strangers or my peers? No.
If someone is being a dingus I just ignore them. I find that I have friends of every race, creed and sexual orientation there is. But given the circumstances, I will laugh at just about anything, really. I'm usually the first one to bust out with the racist jokes and really inappropriate comments. My friends all know this. Will I do it around them? All the time. Will I do it in a room full of strangers? No. That's the problem with XBL (same as the internet) provides glorious anonymity to the masses allowing them to act how they would given a complete free pass from morals.

Like I said in another thread, i'm alot more of an a-hole in real life. If you disrespect me, or someone I care about in real life I'll make sure you regret it. On the internet or Xbox Live? What's the point? it's just stupid. You'd think everyone would be there to have a good time...
There is no point. Sure things can get heated sometimes, but to take it to insults is just dumb and to let it fester and hold a grudge? Really dumb.
