Anybody else getting this PS3-exclusive game? It's finally made its way to North America (it was released pretty early in Japan, so the graphics aren't exactly cutting-edge). I played the first game (which was a pretty good despite the poor voice dubs) and I'm currently playing through the second game (which I've had in a drawer for a year but resisted playing because the first one became such a huge time sink). IGN gives it a "Great" rating (8.5 out of 10... pretty high score for a game that originally came out 2 years ago).
I'm a little disappointed at the news that they took out the hostess dating and host bar management mini-games during the localisation process (I guess it didn't occur to Sega that there are enough adult video game players in North America familiar with the concept of host/hostess clubs that it wouldn't be one of those confusing features... besides the type of person who'd play a Japanese-language, English-subtitled video game about an ex-Yakuza family chairman trying to walk the straight-and-narrow while kicking copious amounts of gangster ass probably appreciates, rather than finds confusing, the inclusion of said features), though. I guess I can always import the Japanese release, but my Japanese isn't good enough that I can enjoy playing through a whole video game that relies on a lot of conversation and Legend of Zelda style exploration in between fighting sequences. |

Heh. That's a dedicated gamer.
To be fair though, there's nothing inherently "pervy" about the concept of hostess/host bars. It's a fairly common type of licensed establishment in Asia particularly in Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and the Philippines (a couple of people I know worked as hostesses after high school). Hostesses/hosts aren't prostitutes, they're paid to make conversation with bar guests/customers (usually busy male or female professionals in their 30s all the way to their 50s) and encourage them to spend more on drinks (but not so much that it becomes crassly obvious or that the customer become extremely intoxicated). Although it's perhaps unavoidable that some hostesses/hosts end up exchanging sexual favors for monetary or material compensation on the side. I guess it looks somewhat "pervy" from a Western perspective because there isn't really an equivalent in Canadian, European, or American licensed establishment practice while the idea of paying an attractive and conversationally-gifted person of the opposite or same sex to laugh at one's jokes, listen attentively to one's stories, and generally act and look happy while one is at an establishment that serves alcohol has a long history in Asian culture, and in Japanese culture in general (think back to the male and female geisha of the 18th century). |

Wow. I just watched the review for this game at gametrailers.com and was totally taken by surprised. I never played Yakuza 1 or 2... actually I didn't even know they existed. LOL. But I LOVED Shenmue 1 and 2 mostly because I could go exploring in a fully realized city, so this game just looks freaking bada**. Virtual Tokyo and Okinawa looks so awesome IMO and the gameplay kind of reminds me of a fighting version of my beloved Parasite Eve 1 and 2 with all those RPG elements; I am so getting this game.

Well, finally got a copy of the game. Lucky, too. I walked into my local EB Games (I guess they're the Canadian version of Gamestop) thinking I could just pick one up off the shelf, but apparently they'd sold out of their copies the first few days the game was out. They did have one copy in the back, a pre-order, but the guy who was supposed to pick it up three days before didn't show up. If I waited a few more minutes when the pre-order expired or whatever, I could buy it. Well, the guy never showed, so I snagged the game. I'm keeping it unopened and in a drawer for the meantime, though, having played the first and second games, I know it can be a real time-sink (I'm the type of gamer who likes to finish all the side quests and whatnot).

Ah man, I just watched the Featurette / Gameplay trailer at Gametrailers.com for Yakuza 4. It looks so much better than Yakuza 3; I seriously hope they bring that one to North America too... and this time without dropping any game content. I want it all damn it! LOL.
