Hey guys, we're about to buy a Nintendo Switch for our kids (6 and 9 years old). Which Mario game would you recommend to start with?
Odyssey? New SMB U deluxe? Paper Mario? 3D All-Stars? |

The NSMB games are great, but they're all alike. 3d world is coming soon with upgrades- it was fun on WiiU, so it will only be better on Switch with the added content. In short, there is no such thing as a bad Mario title (except the CDi games, of which we must never speak). Also, make sure you're dipping into the Zelda franchise as well. BOTW is the game I've played through more than any other... 6 times in about a year! Link's Awakening is great as well.

I would start with Mario Odyssey. My 4 year old and 6 year old love it. I love it.

I'd throw my hat for Odyssey myself. It takes all the lessons from the All Stars Set and polishes it to perfection. All Stars is nice for a trip down memory lane...but Odyssey is just so much better.
If you want a nice 2D Mario, I'd argue Mario Maker has a good bit of longevity with multiple styles. It also tends to go on "sale" more often than the others. New Super Mario Bros is good, but I'm not sure it brings much you can't get in Maker. Paper Mario, despite being marketed as an RPG, is almost as much a puzzle game. It's decent, but I think it has the potential to frustrate younger gamers. 3d World kind of walks the line between the mechanics of 3D games with the design elements of 2D games. Again, a good game, but I think Odyssey's open ended design and wealth of side activities and secrets offers a lot more for either a casual level or hardcore level.

Thanks, guys! Yeah, I'm going for Odyssey then.
Mario Maker is on my personal want-list, as well as Zelda BOTW and Mario Kart 8. Mario Maker looks like sooo much fun, creating your own worlds. Zelda BOTW is a no-brainer. As a kid I loved Zelda 1 (NES), Link's Awakening (GB) and A Link to the Past (SNES) so I'm sure BOTW will not disappoint me. Same thing goes for Mario Kart! |

Edit: most of the old Zelda games come free with your Nintendo online membership so be sure to check them out for some nostalgia
