I'd argue that the plastic arts (the thing itself) isn't really the art anyway---the art is the process, the destruction/creation--but I draw the line at considering any mass-produced consumer good "art". Thomas Kincade's Painter of Light bullshit? Those Jack Vettriano umbrella-dancer prints? Any number of Picasso prints and plates and other horseshit? The art was there in the creation of the original, the rest are copies at best, and mass-produced kitsch at worst. If mass-produced kid's toys are "art", so is Tupperware.
And what I mean when I say I'm not driven by nostalgia- I'm not trying to have the toys I used to have or chasing the feeling I had getting new toys as a kid. It's just a hobby that I care about and am invested in. Honestly, I would say customizing probably draws my interest more than anything else, but a close second would be love for the source material. I guess it kind of pisses me off because for some reason, collecting action figures sits on this little island where you have to be a dork, or nostalgia hungry, or whatever. No one tells people who've played video games their whole life they only play them now because of nostalgia, or that people who played guitar in high school are only still playing because of nostalgia. Apparently collecting is the one hobby that can't grow with a person and just be something they enjoy, it has to be nostalgia driven.

Nostalgia certainly isn't making those Obi-Wan Retro figures move any faster! Damn, those things are clogging every store I go to.
Worst part is that the TVC stuff is put on the same pegs half the time by idiotic Target and Walmart employees, so naturally the stores put out less TVC because the peg is full with Retro Revas and Fifth Brothers and Grand Inquisitors.

I mean, you can interpret it how you see fit. By extension, I'll never be able to afford what you might call art, so on occasion, one settles for reproductions, because it serves the same purpose. This is no different.

But anyway, I tried to make a point of saying that I see the art in toy customization because you guys are creating stuff. That's something I'll never knock. But while I can appreciate the engineering and design that goes into a mass-produced toy, it's just not "art" to me. As I said though, "art" is more an act than a thing to me.

Apparently collecting is the one hobby that can't grow with a person and just be something they enjoy, it has to be nostalgia driven. Nostalgia has always rubbed me the wrong way. When I hear collectors talk about getting a "nostalgia kick" from buying something or the pull of nostalgia, etc... It just reminds me of the song "Glory Days" by Springsteen. It's a nice tune, good beat, easy to dance to. But it's all about a bunch of losers who peaked in high school. I've never been able to wrap my head around how that's in any way appealing. I use toy collecting as a creative offset to a career that is heavily analytical. I have little talent for art or music, but I can create stories, abstract models, and theorize. The toys I buy are sort of like props or muses from which I imagine a whole galaxy of interconnected plots and histories. Like what happens when you mash a bunch of different IPs into a singular existence? What is the result of DC, Marvel, Star Wars, Halo, Warhammer, and others getting smashed together? I create entire economic models and political ideologies for different factions. I imagine stories like the time Darth Malgus convinced Death Company Ultramarines to abandon the Emperor of Man and serve the Sith Imperium. Toys are the tactile connection I use to bounce my imagination off of. |

I'm a little younger than some of these folks on here. I have very little connection to the older Star Wars figures. So yeah, some of these retro Star Wars figures look ragamuffin. Like, 'how did these ever get made' bad.
That said, I am very excited about the retro re-release of R2-D2 & C3PO. I did get pulled into the POTF nostalgia though. Now I want all my characters to be like VTC Dark Times Darth Vader good.

I doubt an Andor wave would sell. makes me thing either Ahsoka or Mando S3.
An Ahsoka wave would probably sell decent. Or at least people who want a Vintage inspired Thrawn. You'd have to imagine such a wave would be Thrawn, Ahsoka, Ezra, Sabine, some trooper, and Hera. |

They all begin with "M" and "Melba" is one of them, which is on the same level as "Milquetoast", as well as "Middleton" and "Midvale", so I think whatever it is middle of the road boring. But boring sells because nerds tend to be boring.

That Retro Dark Times Vader is a buck off plus a coupon for $2.75 right now if anyone has been looking for one.
