As long as you don't pay attention to the background in the Death Star scenes. Looks like a cardboard cutout with Christmas lights poking through. Also ignore the fact that Luke and Han are completely clean in the scenes following the garbage compactor. (Even Ford & Hammil makes jokes about this).

i like the 97 special editions of star wars for special effects improvements, but pretty much after that the more george lucas was surrounded by yes men the worse it got.

I forget the name of the other kid, but I recall after the readings for young Anakin, everyone in the room liked a different actor better- like everyone- and George even agreed that the was "better" but just decided he wanted the kid they casted instead, with no real basis in his audition.

redlettermedia's 7 part phantom menace break down showed exactly that. people that were too afraid to tell him that something wasnt working.
the reason why the first star wars movie was so great is people working on it had no shame in telling him an idea was terrible; and something i cant wrap my head around, is kathleen kennedy was one of those people who had better improvments to those movies. and she shit out whatever input she had in the sequel trilogy. like, she totally took his part for them and we are both fortunate and unfortunate for that because had he been at the helm it would have been a lot worse. |

but boy am i glad they made that one purple skin chick pilot. yep! just the ONE pirate. dont need any more of them! it's great they also didnt bother to make that tie pilot figure, i get it though. he was way more interesting than anime name main character that fucking sucks. glad yeager and his droid were short packed and barely made it to the shelves.
rebels was a masterpiece. resistance was just an embarrassment. Quote:
The joke is that Galaxy's Edge was supposed to originally be OT themed. Then TFA happened and Kennedy whispered to Iger saying they need an ST theme for the this new generation and not the grumpy 40-year olds. The designers had to shift in the middle of the development. The good news is most of the theme park is supposedly modular and can be changed into a new theme with little difficulty so there may be hope with the success of the Mandalorian that it will go back to the OT as originally intended

I love the behind-the-scenes featurettes where George will be saying shit and all the producers are rolling their eyes at how stupid it is, but not actually contesting him in any way.

A background that looks like cardboard, and ragamuffin special effects are not nitpicking, especially since it was brought up in regards to it being "timeless". My kid loves star wars, but she sees A New Hope and shakes her head and views it as a damn antique. Kind of like a rotary telephone. Are rotary phones timeless? I mean, they still *can* function, but...... I love that movie, and the trilogy. But that first one, while still very popular, hasn't exactly aged like a fine wine. That's all I was saying.

i really like the jabba sequence in the special edition. not so much han stepping on jabba because it's out of character for han and jabba both; but in that specific case i believe in the "i meant for this" mantra he ended up using as an excuse to completely ruin his movies the second to infinite times he's made newer edits.
also cleaning up the chroma key for the visual effects in spaceship windows. but things like the lead into to mos eisley and the outrider? i could live without today. but in 97, seeing the outrider was pretty damn neat. he could have stopped with the 97 cuts and been fine. but he was too far up his own ass. as far as my kid's concerned, he's fine with the cartoons and doesnt sit through any movie, but when he does it'll be the 97 editions and no prequels, solo just because, and the first and last sequel. he can watch the other crap when he's older if he wants so he can see what little any of it does to add to the stories. i really want the darth vader is luke's dad reveal to be big for him. it was a dud for the prequels as far as im concerned. That's still just nitpicking, and has no effect on the "timeless" nature of a story. The aspect of timelessness in a work of fiction is driven by the themes and narratives not the limitations of technology when it was produced. I'd argue that A New Hope has aged better than wine, more akin to whisky or scotch, and is a more relevant story today as more folks find themselves adrift and aimless.
I agree that the themes and storytelling are timeless. The movie as a whole? Nope. Guess we'll agree to disagree on that one. The "limitations of technology" is exactly the issue here. It's not nitpicking if some of the scenes look like shit and it takes you completely out of the movie watching experience. Again, kids watch a New Hope, and may have SOME appreciation for it, but overall, it's an antique. It's slow, and it puts them to sleep. And again, to be clear, I LOVE the movie. Always will. But that doesn't mean I can't look at it objectively, through a modern lens, and say, damn, this thing is really dated.

yep.
making changes based on the lack of technology at the time, even though they were super innovative to begin with - ok. because why wouldnt an innovative movie want to show off modern day innovations. it's not like all their special effects are gone, they're enhanced or improved. sometimes both. getting rid of the land speeder's vaseline smudge is fine to me. making changes like "i always wanted young anakin force ghost at the end of endor scene." - no you fucking did not. |
