Nobody has argued Hasbro can't do it, we've argued they won't do it. As the old saying goes, "thou's juice be not worth thy squeeze". 1/18 is a dying scale and doesn't compare favorably for large companies with multiple competing lines. Smaller margins means smaller ROI. The majority of the consumer base is moving to 1/12. The main selling point for 1/18 was vehicles and playsets, but those items are getting too expensive and not selling. Smaller 1/35 scales like Star Wars Fleet Missions supports vehicles. Why spend $200k making tools for 1/12 and 1/18 when you can pay $100k to only tool up 1/12 and reissue something for 1/18 with new paint deco? There's reasons why Hasbro only opted to get the Fortnite 6" license and not both 4" and 6" licenses. Same for GI Joe. New sculpts for Classified, reissues for retro. Marvel Legends rolls on while 4" collectors get Marvel in 5 POA. 1/18 fans and collectors just aren't that important. Thou's juice be not worth thy squeeze |

Bingo. They decide not to.

Has anyone else noticed the selection of star wars 3 3/4" figs to be lacking at Wal-Mart/Target/Kohls? I've only seen the a couple of the Mandolorian figs. I'm assuming this is more due to nothing being released currently but was not sure if this is everyone else's experience as well.

Hasbro choosing not to do something in 3.75 isn't Hasbro saying screw you to 3.75 collectors. It's exactly Bujo said, it's not WORTH doing because the return on the investment isn't there at the moment for 3.75.
It's the reason why they've moved major new vehicles to Haslab. Its risk free development. No worrying about paying for tooling and not making enough money on it. As for why things moved to 6 inch. My hunch has always been that the average collectors have less space as adults. Sounds counter-intuitive right? 6 inch being bigger and all. So 3.75 has fantastic world building, yes. But WHO takes advantage of that? How many collectors have their big vehicles and/or a large amount of their figures in storage bins in a closet. Who actually have dioramas set up for display? My buddy literally spend an extra $200 or so a month on a storage unit for his massive 3.75 collection. No room to enjoy it the way it was meant to be enjoyed. BUT He displays his 6 inch collection in his apartment because 6 inch figures have better display and shelf presence on their own. A handful of 6 inch figures on a shelf, posed and arranged looks SO MUCH better than a handful of 3.75 figures on a shelf in the same manner. There's no room for the world. Watch the Throne |

I haven't been seeing ANY 3.75" SW in stores. I'm so glad I preorder most of this stuff. Yakface claims they've been hitting stores. So either the fulltime scalpers have been wiping out the 1 case each store gets, or they haven't made it to the more rural/suburban areas yet. The latest wave is a good one (Jawa w/egg, Clone Trooper Echo), so wouldn't shock me if scalpers wiped em out. Quote:

I'll count myself lucky, for having the room and time to have so many "worlds" on display at once. That said, I do agree with your premise though.

I agree, but what changed? Hasbro wasn’t making 25th and ME because they loved us. They made them because they sold. MU 4 inch again wasn’t for the fans - it was because that scale made the most cash. So what changed from a financial standpoint? I mean was it really fans taste? I doubt it. If Hasbro was putting out Legends, Black, and Classified in 4 inch then that’s what everyone would be buying. I get were we are, but when did Hasbro say “oh wow we make more $$$ with 6 inch and what caused that change in the industry?
Toy makers have been pushing 6 inch because the margins are higher. That is a fact. Whether collector desire for this scale across the board is natural or coerced is debatable.

Profit margins. Depending who you ask, but this is a chicken and egg situation. Do collectors prefer six inch so 4 inch went away, or did 4 inch go away because 6 inch became prominent.

I argue that old fans have aged out and new fans are aging out of imaginative play patterns at younger ages due to increased screen usage. Lego has disturbing stats like only 50% of build sets are constructed. 85% of build sets are never reassembled if they come apart or break. Most consumers are really only interested in mini-fig collecting. I think this also applies to action figures where both old and young customers are more interested in collect and display patterns than imaginative story telling play patterns. 1/12 is much better for display and strikes a really good balance of size and price in comparison to 1/18 and 1/6. I think this move is fan driven, or began as fan driven and is now supported by the big companies jumping onboard. Collector oriented lines seem to support this theory. Collector based lines and Kickstarters seem to favor 1/12 by a wide margin. "Animal Warriors of the Kingdom" has had three toy kickstarters, two for 1/18 and one for 1/12. The first 1/18 KS funded for $75k (116%), the second for $69k (138%), and the most recent 1/12 KS funded for $360k (364%). The 1/12 KS was far more successful than the 1/18 scale fundraisers by every metric. The FourHorsemen's Mythic Legions line was originally planned to be 1/18 scale, but production costs and fan interest favored 1/12. In the end it launched as a 1/12 line and has been wildly successful. Mythic Legions has far higher sales and returns than the comparative 1/18 fantasy line from Bossfight Studios. More and more collector lines are launching in the 1/12 scale because it has the best opportunity for success. Coffin Comics, Valaverse, Xesray Studio, Super7, etc... I think at retail the future of 1/18 will be figures like what Jazzwares and SpinMaster put out, while the collector market will have Marauders, JoyToy, Bossfight, etc... Quote:
