I know I’m in the minority, but I enjoyed Solo and Rogue One much more than either of the new trilogy films. (Although I didnt hate them as much as some others)
Rogue One gave me some of what I most wanted to see in a SW spin off.... nuts and bolts, OT era Empire vs Rebellion action. The only part I didn’t really care for was the Vader bit at the end of the film... not because it wasn’t cool, but because it was totally weird against the rest of the movie. We’ve been rooting for the rebels the entire film and just watched the main characters die, and now we are supposed to cheer for Vader chopping everybody up? It would have worked better if he had been dispatching the main cast rather that some rebel red shirts. But I’m a weirdo and my ultimate fantasy SW spin off has always been something really close to “A Bridge Too Far” or “Saving Private Ryan” but with the Empire vs the Rebellion. I’ve wanted to see something like that since I was a kid. Or maybe something like “Stalingrad” or “The Bridge” about the last ditch hold out Storm Troopers on Coruscant...

A while back, a Quinlan Vos series had been rumored, which would have taken place between episodes 3 and 4. That would have been more my speed. A force user not beholden to the jedi against the backdrop of the Empire, but not necessarily required to be immersed in it.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved Rogue One... Just that Cassian was a boring character... However if they fleshed him out more in future TV shows, it might make me change my mind. I would love to see K2 again.

Whatever, you grumpy nerds. One of the best things about Rogue One is its focus on the nitty-gritty Rebellion, not to mention the complete absence of annoying Skywalkers and other arrogant Jedi fuck-ups. I'm totally looking forward to watching a series about espionage and dirty-ass doings during the Rebellion. And The Mandalorian sounds pretty great too, showing us the every day nastiness of life in The Outer Rim. Plus, Taika Fucking Waititi is directing an episode! Also, Jon Favreau.
Most of the characters I found to be unlikeable and some scenes like the ones with Gerrera didn’t seem to advance the plot. What I did appreciate was that it still felt like SW even though it didn’t have lightsabers and Jedi. |

Well RO had Vader at the end, with lightsaber against blaster action, and it had the whole Chirrut thing (and lots of Kyber crystal importance was felt).
Originally Chirrut was supposed to be a Jedi(at one point Ram Kota was considered from TFU). Jyn's mother was supposed to be a former Jedi Knight in hiding at some point in the process but that was rewritten, but remnants trickled through with the whole Kyber necklace. And the Force was very much felt throughout the film. Chirrut may of as well had been a Jedi since he does things that were far out there but instead they just made him a martial artist and religious zealot that was somehow attuned or in touch with the Force or the Force him(and Erso too cause of her charm crystal). While I do prefer RO and Solo over the sequel trilogy but both RO and Solo had production and editing issues, and were not as great as they should've been. Solo felt too much like a pilot to a TV or a Star Trek movie, they killed off to many of the new characters way too soon, and it had a weak mcguffin and no true villain. The movie also suffered from not enough action(especially Imperial), while Rogue maybe had too much action. It felt like Solo should've came out before Rogue One, as it was tied to Rogue One - more seen in the novelization but it felt that way even watching the film. I did like in the novel Qi'ra did see Maul only one time before the hologram reveal, and it was a terrifying experience for her. At the end of the book, its revealed that he was the one she was brought before by Dryden Vos, to learn to sense the energy of the opponent through the abilities of Teras Kasi during her brutal training under Vos. It is confirmed after the hologram, that Maul was the master that taught Teras Kasi to Vos. So he did indeed supervise Qi'ra's training more shadowy in the past when she was first brought into the fold. Her Teras Kasi training mimic's Maul's Sith training to some degree from older EU stories. Where she would be broken and rebuilt stronger, to be a killing weapon and all of those kinda things, to fight without eyes or ears ect. She was subjected to extreme disciplines and tortures to enhance her abilities, to build up & heighten all senses. Seems such martial arts in SW(including the Whill Guardians) can give non Force sensitives near Force-like sensory and reflex abilities. Teras Kasi was designed to counter Jedi Knights. Solo was supposed to come out immediately following TFA while the Solo character was still fresh to the general audience(imo having Ford have his way in offing the character I don't think helped the sequel franchise either) but was pushed back. |

I remember a reference to the vaults of Scarif, but how else was Solo tied to Rogue One?

Aside for Scarif name drop, you had the marauder Cloud Rider gang, the character of Two-Tubes was a direct reference between films. In the novel its revealed at the end that Enfys Nest was working for/with Saw and the Partisans. Saw introduces his young ward Jyn Erso to Nest as well. Plus both films used the the Decraniated cyborg slave/servants, the product of Dr Evazan on Jedha.
