you're right. it is inexplicable. 1994 cancellation made sense. bringing it back, making lots of money at it and then cancelling it again every 3 years when it was making lots of money is inexplicable. i was on joecustoms at that time, "deth of the line" was a joke becuase hasbro was just looking for excuses to end it; yet people were clearing the shelves (at full price) for cobra troop builder six packs that were less than the price of a 2 pack now.

hasbro wants a product. the factory says "we need 2k of the product minimum to make at this much." hasbro says "ok" or "no". if they say "ok" they continue with production. if they say "no" then they find someone who will at another factory they have product made out of. then with hasbro's relationships with the retail stores they "crowdfunded" with, they can negotiate a price to sell the product. walmart as an example tends to have more leverage with how much something is sold at in their store.

So far, Haslabs on the secondary market sell for about twice the original price on eBay. (Or sometimes a little more than twice) As the years go by, they become more scarce and that price rises, which we are seeing with the Barge.
Does anyone foresee folks willing to pay $700 for that Ghost Rider car on eBay a year from now? Quote:
You think so? I realize this *has* been the case, in the past. But you're comparing that tiny car to a freaking giant here. You think this car is on par with Galactus?

I think the HasLab tiers serve a similar function in terms of creating better value the more people sign up. To wit...
In the case of the HISS, the minimum was 8,000 which means that 8,000 units was the bare minimum they needed to produce to hit an (YMMV) acceptible price point. Cost + profit/8000=$300. But it tripled its goal, and we all know that thanks to economies of scale, it costs less per unit to make 24,000 than it does 8,000. It's far simpler and less confusing to just throw in more product for the same quoted price than it would be to adjust the price down on some sliding scale. I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't a legal barrier to changing the price after the fact as well. In both caaes, the more people that sign up, the more product we get. And staggering the tier announcements, while perhaps frustrating, is smart in that it allows them to inject fresh incentive at various points in the campaign. For example, an all-in on a BFS or MTF campaign is worth it instantly, and has the funding grows, that package becomes more valuable as things are added to it, but those things feel very much like bonuses. If I didn't get them, I would still feel I got good value from the base package alone. Conversely, I can't imagine anyone will feel they're getting value out of this Haslab is it only hits is minimal backers and they only get a couple of Robbie Reyes figures (which mind you, would likely be one deluxe figure with a swappable portrait if releases at retail). That's all I mean. And I'm not suggesting they reduce the price throughout the campaign, but they also aren't "re-listing" the Rancor or Cookie Monster at lower price points at a later time. It seems those projects are "dead". And it seems like they learn the wrong lessons when these things fail. And maybe they truly can't produce those things at a lower threshold, but it would be hard for me to believe for some of these, a higher backer requirement and a lower buy in wouldn't be supremely beneficial.

listen man, you're one of a handful of people i like on this forum. im just going to bow out before things get bad and we hate each other.
my say on the matter is i believe hasbro has the means to make them cheaper. i've said ways that they can. i believe haslab is ripped off of kickstarter. i've explained why i think that way. im not going to change my mind. i have a handful of hasbro stock and honestly, it's not good for me to hate the company i hold stock in and tell people not to buy the product. the prices raising because of paint apps and stealing ideas like kickstarter or halfassing a mattycollector style website: i should be happy about because it makes me money. but im not. |

I also imagine a lot of collectors have the same OCD that I do. For example, I only sort of wanted the Crest, and if it hadn't been made, I'd be perfectly fine without, but to know it's out there and I don't have one? It's almost a pathological form of torture. It's not healthy, but it is what it is (luckily, one was gifted to me). Also, there might be people who just can't swing it now, but their fortunes change in a year's time. The one big difference with this, I think, is the tiers being all additional figures. If this hits all those tiers, and depending on the figures, I could see a lot of people buying this to get the figs, and then dumping the car, and actually causing its value to drop. I mean, I don't even collect Legends, but I'd buy that Mephisto at retail without a second thought.

They certainly haven't tried lower price points yet. Maybe they should do some polling to get a better idea of what we as a community really want. |

And I think Hasbro has had the "we'll tell you what you want" issue for a while, which they've buoyed by the "you have to support the line to get the things you want", ie, buy a bunch of shit you don't want and maybe we'll make the things you guys actually want.
