A vintage April is not the same as a current April.
So to really compared, you'd have to wait the equivalent amount of time (10 years??) and see how much the current release April was worth. Then could see if the vintage was worth more then the current. The vintage was probably sold for 3 bucks at retail. So selling at 9 bucks now is a good increase in value for that figure. BTW, it's not ten years, it's twenty. You have no idea how old that made me felt when I heard that. Even Power Rangers are selling nostalgia based lines now. >.> |

You get a DVD with the new one. Maybe thats why they charge the extra dollar.

But that's my point. It IS the same figure. The EXACT same figure. They ALL are! Not updates like 25th Joes, it's the same damn molds, same accessories, same paint apps, almost the same packaging, and the new one is selling for a dollar more than the rare vintage ones! What you call a "good increase" amounts to less than what we call standard retail inflation!

Even Power Rangers are selling nostalgia based lines now. >.> Basically, most any toy from late 80's - 90's and up will never hold it's value like any other toy before the mid-80's because there are so many "collectors". The reason older toys are worth anything is because they got played with, lost or destroyed and there are technically fewer of them now. |

These days, rarity has nothing to do with anything. Popularity and/or perceived rarity are more important.
Case in point: Did you know there was a second series of Chronicles of Narnia Prince Caspian action figures? Single cards and deluxes? No? Not many people do. The first series wasn't popular, got clearanced out by Target and TRU, and quietly went away. The second series showed up briefly at a midwestern pharmacy chain called Pamida. That's the ONLY store that got these that I know of. I'm sure the production run on these was incredibly low. There are about four on Ebay right now for Buy It Nows of about $20 and that in itself surprised me because they're not usually up for auction. They were released in Great Britain also, but on multilingual cards so the American releases are different. In terms of rarity, I could only compare them to the chase action figures. I bet there are more Clear Wraiths out there than these. But no one really collected the Narnia action figures so nobody really cares. I don't think they're listed in the pricing guides at all. No toy site that I know of ever announced their existence. Will these ever be worth anything? No. Because even though they're probably ridiculously uncommon, there's no demand for them. I remember that crash... also with the sports card fad. If you don't enjoy the toy collectibles you're paying for and your only in it to make money... this upcoming market crash is gonna hurt.

Although I wouldn't mind a crash, it would be more stuff cheaper, I don't see a "crash" coming. As mentioned earleir, demand is still up there, and even during a recession the toy maket is thriving....let me say that the Joe Market is thriving. The comic/baseball market crashed when the market was flooded and well, I think we all "grew up" and perceived value dropped. I'm glad I sold my Ken Griffey 89 Upper Deck Rookie in 1992. I don't see the Joe maket dropping off until we die.

Toys for the most part have already had a "crash" in the late 1990's early 2000 when everyone finally realized they didn't need to spend all the money on the newest waves of Star Wars, Toy Biz Figures, Spawn Series and so on...the speculators for the most part hit Baseball, Comics, toys in that order....the market is fairly stable now and I don't see that changing in the near future....The thing to remember is Avoid the Hype...The items that crash are in MOST cases Variants that mean very little ie Gung Ho Variant Hat, Shipwreck tattoo, so on....Exclusives can also get hit hard once the hype dies down for a line.....

Well, a couple weeks ago at TRU I saw some of the anniverary edition TMNT figures. I felt tempted to get one or two, especially the April O'neil, which was my first one and very rare back in the day. Seeing the $10 price tag, I decided not to get into another expensive nostalgia-based toy line. Well, a week later I was browsing through this little independant toy store for collectors. These guys have complete (though filthy) Night Raven's waiting for collectors to give them some TLC. Well, while browsing the figures, guess what I saw. A vintage April O'Neil, MOC, for $9.
