Hmm dictated by Hasbro?........ are you perhaps writing any file cards for any upcoming toyline by chance?
Thanks for answering all of these questions , the books sounds great and seems to be in good hands! |

I keep waiting until I have time to craft the PERFECT response to this, that will convert millions of nascent comics readers across the globe into fans of this book. But that's maybe not gonna happen, so...
GI Joe is going to be a story about everyday heroism in the face of overwhelming odds. It will be crafted, at first, largely around one-shot missions, in a format that will allow us to stretch out and really explore the world of GI Joe. At times it will be fun, at times it will be brutal. It will show the horrors of war, the dangers of fascism and the beauty and grace that can be found in even the worst of situations. I also want to say that this isn't going to be, in any way, an "ironic" take on GI Joe. There's nothing wrong with that, per se: I did it in GI Joe: Deviations. But this book is something different. Something else you won't have read elsewhere, yet: my Dad was a career Air Force enlisted man. He retired an E-7 after 20 years in (he probably would have stayed in longer, but he had some injuries that would continue to grow -- he spent the last couple decades of his life living off military disability), and was deeply, fiercely proud of his service. I was born in Wilford Hall at Lackland AFB, so while I never served, the military has been a part of my life from when I took my first breath. My Dad was also a lifelong smoker, and spent most of last year fighting lung cancer. Last fall things took a turn for the worse, and it became clear that his fight was almost over. I was out of the country at the time, but I started talking to him by phone daily instead of weekly, and during one conversation, in early October, I told him that I had been hired to write a new GI Joe book. And he was so, so proud of me, and so absolutely overjoyed. My older brother was there, and told me that after he got off the phone, he kept talking about it, and said, "Yeah, so I'm gonna go ahead and take some of the credit for that." Ha. The next day, he collapsed and slipped into a semi-coma that he never recovered from. I flew back, and he died a few days later. And telling him that I was hired to write GI Joe turned out to be the last fully lucid conversation I ever had with him. None of which has anything to do with the book. But I wanted to let you know that this is being written by someone with a deep respect for our servicemen and women, and a personal connection to the military. Our book, at Hasbro's request, is largely about civilians being recruited by an espionage organization during a time of war, but it will still absolutely honor those who serve, by telling a story that, while not jingoistic or nationalistic, will be rooted in stories of heroism, duty and sacrifice. I am so proud, and so honored, to be writing GI Joe. No GI Joe story will make everyone happy, but I believe that the story we're telling will make the majority of the readership very happy. And I also believe that it would have made my dad very proud. |

First, I'm too lazy to check, but I'm 100 percent sure I didn't use the word "dictated." And second, this has been very much in line with the amount of involvement that licensors typically have in their property. I've worked on GI Joe, TMNT, Power Rangers, Samurai Jack, King Kong, Clue, My Little Pony, Bravest Warriors, Pathfinder and a handful of other licensed properties, and trust me, Hasbro is not overly involved in this comic at all. It's their characters, they belong to them, so of course they're going to take a hand in guiding how those characters are used. It's been an awesome collaboration so far, and absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. |

I can tell you right now that without the sci-fi elements, it is no longer G.I. JOE. A lot of fans come on these boards clamoring for Rainbow 6 Part 2. But that's not why anyone ever read or collected G.I. JOE. Every attempt to make the property "realistic" always fails. Always. Why? Because G.I. JOE has always had sci-fi elements in it (excluding the 1st 4 years in the '60s). If Hasbro wants to do Rainbow 6, they should buy that property and make comics for those fans. G.I. JOE, however, is Serpentor, the Intruders, Super JOE, shape-shifting siblings (Zartan, Zandar, Zarana), Cobra-La (at times), evil bad guy super-tech, etc. The list goes on and on. Every fanboy on here loved G.I. JOE as kids because of the fantastic. None of us ever wanted to watch G.I. JOE perform a gritty dark ops espionage mission. We wanted the MASS Device, the Brainwave Scanner and the Weather Dominator, nanomites... That's what drew us to Joe every day after school.
If this new comic is just about the Joes doing various missions that any other special forces group could perform, it's going to get boring fast. Let's be honest. There's a reason there's a massive dearth of war comics available within the comics market. They just don't sell. Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth. Some will probably disagree, but are they going to be enough to sell thousands of comics a month? It's highly doubtful. Last edited by seaneley; 06-27-2019 at 11:57 PM.. |

Is this going to be a heavy handed POTUSA's New Clothes "Exposé?" Or will it be more in line with Hama's intelligently written left leaning sympathies? Even some of the Sunbow oeuvre was quite sophisticated in concept and execution. The story of your father was genuinely graceful and heartfelt, it would be well, if that was the spirit the story was handled.

I do appreciate the feedback, and do hope you'll give the book a chance. You may discover it's not for you, but you may also be surprised. |

Just a programming note: I'd mentioned I'll be popping in and out, and I'll probably be out now until early-to-mid next week, when I'll catch up on any other questions that came in. Thanks, all.

But I agree. Sci-Fi elements have been a part of Joe, but don't necessarily define it.
