I really want to amp up my involvement in this line- got to start cutting elsewhere.
Texas Red and Arizona Ranger are going to be a must for me, regardless.

Has anyone had issues with SmallJoes recently?
I love the CFT DNL line, and purchased two figures from them. The one arm broke at the elbow removing it from the package. I put very little pressure on it, as I was not actually articulating that joint. When I contacted them, they said I had to pay return shipping in order to get a replacement. I contacted them again and said that I am happy to provide pictures but that they should pay return shipping as this is clearly defective. They said they don't do that and when I asked about just a replacement arm-since they want the products back I figure they might have spare parts-radio silence. I get they are a small business and I would have been willing to work out just about any compromise but ignoring me is poor customer service. I guess if I want more I buy directly from CFT DNL, because they will not get any more business from me. BTW, yes, I know use a hair dryer etc. I have never had this happen with another figure from this line or any other. The peg that inserts into the upper arm is hollow and you can see a stress mark on half of it. I don't know if this is a manufacturer error or poor design (by the factory, not CFT DNL)but that would explain the very easy breakage. I am not a big spender but I was a repeat customer. WAS. |

So, while this will come off as some snarky dick-headedness on my part; it's the functional truth that y'all shouldn't be buying these DNL figures with money you can't 'lose'. Not just yet. |

I’ve got everything but the current preorders and celebrity figures. I need to start ordering again.

Truth be, that's CFT policies they're repeating to you, not SmallJoes. The production run on the DNL figures is so small there essentially are *NO* 'leftovers' for replacements and such. They also lost a shitload of money on the first series so they didn't have any money to pay for return shipping. From everything I know third-hand I believe that first series of DNLs ended up being paid for out of Paul Mundheim's pocket after the factory fucked up and wasted the KS funds. They're doing much better financially now but I'd be surprised if Paul's broken even yet, much less actually made any profit.

In the end, they are a business. If the run is too small or the product is substandard, then they lose money |

Yeah, either there or direct from CFT DNL.

I don't have any first-hand experience with broken parts, thankfully (knock on wood). But there was something about this in John's appearance earlier this summer on the Order of Battle podcast (have a listen, lots of interesting stuff in it!). Around the 36 minute mark, they talk about SmallJoes and QC issues, with John saying that SmallJoes and CFT used parts from swaps on broken figures to be able to send out replacement or missing parts. So, I would think that would explain why SmallJoes wants the broken figure returned, so the good parts can be salvaged. Though if they do have extra stock/parts, I would have thought it would be easier for them to just send you the extra part. Maybe they want to be able to examine the broken figure, maybe they want to salvage even the broken part if possible, maybe they don't have confidence in people doing the parts swap fixes themselves. I really don't know. From what you're saying, it sounds like they're asking both sides to eat a bit of the costs, with you paying the return shipping and they paying for new shipping. I can see why that might seem out of whack with what retailers will generally do. But I don't know, with a fledgling toyline and SmallJoes being a key supporter, I'd probably just do it and look at it as a contribution to the line's future success. Whatever the outcome, hopefully it doesn't sour you on the line. If you're not happy with SmallJoes customer service, then Chicken Fried would be happy to have you buy from them directly, where if any issues occur in the future you can deal with John directly. |

I get they are a small business and I would have been willing to work out just about any compromise but ignoring me is poor customer service. I guess if I want more I buy directly from CFT DNL, because they will not get any more business from me. There are 2 pretty decent options to fix the issue you currently have or if it happens again ever. Option 1: Reach out to JE Russell on FB and let him know that you had an arm break. See what he can come up with to help. He is always very accommodating with me on any issue I've ever had. Ask if he has any spares he could offer to you. I wouldn't recommend mentioning anything regarding your SmallJoes experience. That is a whole separate entity from him. He's friends with the owner and probably wouldn't appreciate hearing anything negative about them. Especially if mentioning it does absolutely NOTHING to help you and isn't relevant to the reason you reached out to him in the first place. Just proper etiquette. Option 2: Check out Vitruvian Armory. I bought a ton of DNL spare parts this year. It seems their stock has dwindled, but emailing Justing over there might get you what you need. https://vitruvianarmory.com/dime-novel-legends/ I hope this helps! The quality of the line has improved significantly since that first wave. Be sure to always use a hairdryer or boiling water to loosen up everything beforehand. I've had a couple of snap-jobs with MTF and BFS as well. |
