Use to watch it not that long ago on History Television (Canadian TV channel), it was really good. There is a crappy section though IMO when they started going a bit soap operaish and away from showing the grunt life, by adding love interests for the Lt and Sgt. (I think I read they did this to compete with another show), the first season was the best and the last section was good, after they killed off the Lt.'s love interest and got back to following the platoon life. Combat! is still my favorite tv series though (I dont count Band of brothers as a TV series, thats more of a mini series with a huge moviesque budget.)

I don't know how I ever missed this show when it was first on. I only found out about it a few years ago when TNT I think was showing them in the afternoon.
It had quite a few guest stars that either were already pretty good or went on to be stars. |

That's true.....I also notice watching the 90s Outer Limits how many future big names passed through there.

Big Tour of Duty (1987-1990) fan, though I haven't seen the show for years. I was in high school when the show made it's debut in Fall 1987, and I watched it at the time - as much as my schedule would let me.
Excellent & realistic series. This is one of the best war dramas I've seen, and it rivaled some bigger budget films out there. It was common for the show to kill off regular characters, which added to the drama & realism of the series. The '60's-'70's rock/pop soundtrack really added to the show. The theme was the Stones' iconic track Paint it Black, which was very relevant to the show - and IMHO the perfect choice for the theme song. I also remember tracks by Jefferson Airplane (White Rabbit), CCR (Have you ever seen the Rain?), etc. Too many great episodes to go over, but I especially remember: -The one with the hippie medic who was against the war, and couldn't bring himself to kill an enemy soldier - which caused one of his fellow soldiers to die (or almost die). Powerful episode. -A female news (TV?!) reporter has a biased, negative view of the way American Soldiers in Vietnam are & is there to put together a news story condemning them. But, when they save her life, her views on them change. After the first season, I caught the show sporadically - but did tune in for the 2-hour series finale in Spring '90. It was interesting to see the surviving soldiers go home & how difficult it was for some of them to adjust to life "back in the world". I really wanted to watch the show again, and was planning on buying the DVD sets when they came out back in the 200X's....until I found out they had egregiously replaced a lot of the music on the show - including "Paint it Black". So, unless/until they re-do the sets with all the original music intact (which will never happen), I don't plan on seeing this again....unless I can find good streams of this somewhere - with the original music. i haven't seen this show since middle school, but they started showing it on Heroes and Icons a few months ago, and I started watching it again. It's always fun to see the things you didn't catch when you were younger.

I have the first season on dvd. I like it quite a bit but honestly have not watched it all the way through. I have never seen china beach but watching the credits it doesn't look bad. Is it a soap opera love show or does it have some action elements as well?

Its got a bit of mushy drama, buts its got a good bit of action and non romantic drama to balance it out. Sarge is my fave character through the whole series.
