Hello! I'm Erik! You may know me from my Adventure People customs, my updates of the GI Joe Adventure Team, or some of my posts to the Marauder and MoJoes Facebook groups, where I post a lot of my custom figures.
It's been a few weeks since I've had time to sit down and work on a figure, and rather than continue either of my ongoing projects, I wanted to try something a little more ambitious. Here's my take on the 1984 Recondo. When I first got into customizing figures a little over a year ago, I was enticed by the Indiana Jones line, not least because you can get them very cheap on eBay and because they scaled well with modern Joes. Except, as pretty much everyone else has figured out, they DON'T actually scale that well, as they're quite small. As I've explored the hobby a bit more, I've found myself gravitating more toward 4-inch figures like Marauders and Bossfight over pure Hasbro stuff (especially _small_ Hasbro stuff like most of the original 25th Anniversary sculpts). I also like complete, rather than two-piece, torsos when I can get them. I just think it looks better. When it comes to torsos, the Indiana Jones line sure has some enticing options. A lot of the early 80's Joes I'm most interested in recreating are showing off a lot more chest than any of the modern-scale options currently available, and I knew this one--from "Whip Action Indy"--more than fit the bill. Once I cut the torso and arms away from their always-garbage Indiana Jones legs and plopped them on a Marauder US Army waist, they looked like crap. Like a third of the body was missing. The key was to keep the US Army skirt and bond the pieces at a belt line, covered up by a Marauder WW2 belt. Once it was all painted up, you wouldn't even be able to see that the top and bottom of the shirt were two difference pieces, from two different figures. Recondo was always one of my favorite figures when I was a little kid. I largely missed the entire Modern revival of GI Joe, so when I came back into it at the beginning of the pandemic one of the first things I did was check in on all the cool modern versions of the figures I'd loved as a kid. Only, a lot of those figures either didn't exist, or weren't very good adaptations of the original figures. A lot of them also came VERY early in the life cycle of Hasbro's revival, when they were still figuring out the scale and had a more limited parts library. Spoiled by the choice of modern options, I've simply decided to rebuild these figures the way I wanted them to look, or at least get as close as possible. The machete and gun are OG ARAH accessories. This backpack is from JoyToy. I used a similar backpack for my Explorer Brad Adventure People custom and really liked how it enhanced the "explorer" feel of the character. I figured Recondo would do well with a similar pack, and added a flashlight (I think from AVAC's Lab) to the ensemble. Honestly the backpacks are probably my favorite thing JoyToy makes. I think this one was a nice sealer to complete the figure. Here's another angle. And there you have it. My updated Recondo 1984. I didn't want one that looks like he walked off the set of "Predator." I wanted on that looked the way he did when I played with him as a kid--only better. YO JOE! |

Thanks, Letal! Mostly I just wanted a figure with good proportions that looked like the original figure, which was always one of my favorites. I'm having a bit of a hard time remembering any notable recondo storylines in the comic, but it's been AAAAGES since I read them.

Yeah, gotta agree, this is probably the best Recondo figure ever.
