Axonrey, you DID go deep on this one. You made a surfer-turned-soldier status post existential crisis really believable both in concept and execution, and perhaps that is what I admire most here. The FSS Grunt head with longer hair is a great look for the character, probably because of his cold gaze. He’s geared up right, and the blue surfer shirt underneath with matching surfboard are a nice touch to help define who it is beneath all the soldier gear.

I started thinking about Will Scarlet O’Hara from Men in Tights so I was a fan of the switch immediately. Haha.
Plus we had Doc, Snake Eyes & Dial Tone all share their code names with a female counterpart so it fits with something established in Joe. Haha, yeah, it’s why I always enjoy the joint custom threads because it’s funny to see how the same types of ideas are implemented in different ways, especially with two characters as different as your Footloose / Hang Loose & my Zandar.

Zandar - H&R
I'm somewhat biased being a huge Dreadnok fan, more so when one is created with BFS fodder while developing his character in your comic. It's so creative. Kudos to you for an amazing job!! Scarlett - Ian I really like the build you used for this one and of course your paint apps appear so crisp. Great job! Serpentor - Oz This is a fantastic MTF-BFS use of parts, you've certainly delivered quite an imposing character. So much attention to detail, beautiful custom! Footloose - Ax You've gained my loyalty the moment you decided to make that surfer's board part of this accessory list! Fantastic custom! |

What could have been - Action figures that could have been made, but will never see the light of day? That's what got me into customizing in the first place, and this entry is true to that theme...
I had planned since April to get back into making figures based on concept, so I was grateful to this contest for giving me a new deadline for something I had in mind. The parts for this sat for months because I was not sure how to start. The figure represents the nameless, faceless legions of Cobra, except I did use Star Wars Finn for one of the heads, which means I can't unsee at least some individuality and potential for rebellion underneath the mask of a trooper that was trained to be mindless. This suggested a backstory where this is one specific Cobra trooper who climbs the ranks to become a viper. I had planned to create at least 2 more individualized heads, because I don't like army builders to look 100% the same, but ultimately ran out of time. Sometime soon, when I finish a few more details, I will add this to my my growing ranks of concept art-based Cobra legions in the larger project thread: https://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-j...ncept-art.html. The artwork that inspired this is from several images by Josh Nizzi, found here: G.I. Joe Retaliation « joshnizzi.com What if Cobra Retaliation troopers had been given blue camouflage instead of grey and gotten all of this gear? Here is Cobra: The Enemy... |

Great kit and fantastic paint. While I was reading the background and could only see the top of the helmet, I thought it was the MTF Chimera ops helmet. Then to see you painted this guy out from the floor up is most impressive.

FOOTLOOSE:
Went pretty deep in my creative out the box at least in terms of character psyche. I've also change his codename to "Hang Loose". Going into this project, I had a few parameters I needed to meet: 1) A character I hadn’t already done 2) A character I didn’t plan to do in classic ARAH style 3) A build and build out that wouldn’t rip-off or pander to Slice’s New Era aesthetics. First thing I did was narrow in on a few characters who I didn’t have any desire to remake- Torpedo, Ace- then I looked at characters I liked that could use a new spin- Low Light, Spirit, Beachhead. But nothing there seemed inspired. I had settled on Torpedo because I thought I could do some cool things incorporating his Hawaiian heritage and giving him a more dynamic look than a black wet suit (and I still might circle back around on him), then I was thinking- who’s a Joe whose appearance just doesn’t seem to match the figure that represents him. And I read Footloose’s filecard, and, oh boy, did that figure miss the boat. Here’s a guy that decides he wants to see the coast after a life in athletics, becomes a beach bum contemplating the mysteries of life, and essentially joins the military after having an existential crisis. No offense to mustahcio’d bad-asses around the world, but that doesn’t sound like a fitting description. I also never had any love for this Footloose as a kid. His crotch pieced seem oversized and disproportionate, and while now, that seems awesome, at that point in my life, big dick jokes weren’t really on my radar. So, launch-padding off of that, I started with a Venice Beach athletic/fitness freak. Footloose isn’t a bodybuilder, so he had to be a surfer. The cosmic mystery angle also inspired that decision- starting with wayfaring Norin Radd as my base, I added in a generous portion of Bodhi from Point Break, and just to really bring out the existential forethought, I seasoned it with just a little bit of Rustin Cohle from True Detective. What I ended up with was a chill surfer, who at his core, loves life and people, but through introspection and cosmic contemplation, understands that with the beauty of life is also the darkness of it. This is a man that can appreciate mankind despite its flaws, but can also rationalize the need to occasionally kill an individual- this also would have inspired his decision to join the military. This dichotomy, however, can lead to dark periods for Andy Meyers, which feeds his treks through the jungle to identify and eliminate enemy targets, often breaking off from his unit as the inner darkness drives him to his purpose, and often dissipates after sufficient drinking of Cobra blood, and are comparatively brief to his more laid back and contemplative disposition. Psyche Out has noted some of the concerns about Hang Loose’s mental stability, but is hesitant to assess a pathos to it, as “you think about duality of life and death and the existential purpose of a race that’s destined to become extinct, it’s going to take you to some strange places mentally.” Another note here is that I never believed in the idea of green shirts as it relates to GI Joe. This is a specialized team- support staff wouldn’t be field operatives. To that end, if you’re an infantryman on Joe team- that is, your specialty is infantry- you need to be a stone cold killing, one man wrecking crew. I’ve attempted to arm Hang Loose accordingly. Nice write up! I see the disconnect, and I like what you did here. What head is that? I feel I should definitely recognize it, but I’ve got zero ideas. EDIT: FSS Grunt with added hair—cool!
