I just find how aggressively 4" scale is rebuked, shit on, subverted, and lied about.

If you're only buying the crap for custom parts, then wait until it's heavily discounted, in which case the message has already been delivered. Or, more positively, send a message by spending your money on companies creating quality 3.75" figures. Eventually Hasbro should want a piece of the action. If not, screw them. |

The basic 5" line is targeted for kids.
It's larger scaled for little hands and durability. Not to mention kids lose small accessories. Less articulated to be cost effective. i know parents (and kids) who were completely satisfied with the variety of Infinity War basic figures at retail for birthdays, holidays, etc... than chasing down the harder to find, more expensive Marvel Legends versions (which are targeted for older children, adults, and collectors). While it may not be for everyone, it is a business and Hasbro as well as other companies continue to make them. As a 3.75/4 inch (1:18) fan, i'm hoping Hasbro takes a page from SpinMasters recent DC/Batman line, Jazware's Fortnite line, and Lanard's Corps line as avenues for their reatail 'kids' line. But as their basic 5 points of articulation 3.75 inch Star Wars figures have waned, i suspect the larger scaled toys are prevailing, explaining the debut of the 5" cartoon-styled Star Wars action figure line and in this case the possible 4 or 5 inch scale of the basic Avengers line.

I understand the concepts of margin and what a worthwhile return is for Hasbro versus the Club, but I can't conceive that the Club didn't prove there's profitability in 4" Joes- even if low, I think it would still be reliable.
I just find how aggressively 4" scale is rebuked, shit on, subverted, and lied about. Make them internet only, preorders 9 months out to hedge any risk with over production etc. Make a really nice 30th Ann/50th Ann quality line (some of the 25th figures do still hold up but man those 30th figures were great) and they will sell.

The fact that they couldn’t kill Star Wars 4” kind of proves most of our 4” sycophant points. I understand that Star Wars is it’s own economy, but even so.

Agreed. And I think a lot of the errant myth about 4” is just “telephone game” bs where a fact gets repeated until it is not longer the fact. I’m all for paying more for a quality 4” figure. I collect SW TVC, backed BFS amazing figures, and they are all well worth it. Maybe Hasbro doesn’t think that Joe has the support that SW has? But yeah, seconded the notion, the Club proved that a premium 4” Joe line (on vintage card) will sell. I’d like to think Hasbro could do an even better job.

There is all sorts of proof that 4 inch figures sell. The 6 inch Hasbro zombies get bent out of shape when you try to explain. They pull out Hasbro doesn’t make 4 inch because 6 inch makes more money. Fine it makes more money but that doesn’t mean 4 inch makes no money. That’s why companies make different products - to reach more people. Make all the 6 inch figures you want but if they wanted to make 4 inch figures too they could.
I had Secret Wars figures as a kid (Most of my non Mutant faves are from that line) but never saw a need for superheroes to be specifically 4”. They aren’t a big vehicle heavy line. Aside from Sentinels and maybe a Quinn Jet, Punisher Van, etc you don’t really need much else. Motorcycles seem to be very doable for 6”. Superheros, like MotU are more about various sizes (so we have BaF or premium figures) and overly muscular figures, Both MotU and Marvel/Dc lend themselves well to a 6” Scale, Star Wars and Joe are heavy vehicle lines. In The Toys That Made Us Joe episode, Larry Hama states that the vintage figures were loss leaders but they needed to give you a reason to buy the vehicles, which drove profits. I think toy companies have abandoned that model and are trying to make the bulk of their profits from the figures themselves. Maybe an adult collector market sells less vehicles? I am not going to pretend to know. But in the very successful 80s, toy companies seems to be content not to profit from the figures as long as they were making bank on the vehicles. That kept figure costs way down. If I’m collecting Joe and SW I want vehicles. Vehicles are going to be very limited in a 6” line. Hasbro has been giving the 6” SW base a chance to prove themselves with the 6” scaled Tie Fighter, and now Snow Speeder. I think there was a Land Speeder too. That’s very cool but would an AT-AT or Falcon ever be on the table? Time will tell. I want that big ticket vehicle. Honestly I think the SW Black Series is really selling to a collector base who wants a better figure display with larger, more detailed figures but isn’t going to go in for a Hot Toys level item. The 6” line seem to favor collectors who just want Detolfs full of nice big figures without dropping the bank of a Sideshow. 4” collectors seem to enjoy troop building, and dioramas. and vehicles. Not to say that some Marvel Legends collectors don’t troop build Hydras or Hand Ninjas etc, but I’d bet, as someone who dabbles in both scales, that 6” troop builders are rare. It’s expensive and takes up a lot of space, literally. I love 4” when it comes to SW and Joe. I think the IP lends itself that way. I think Hasbro is seeing that it is a profitable scale with the right characters, meaning OT. I also collect 6” just for MotU and Marvel/DC but passed on the Black Series. If I didn’t collect Hot Toys as well I may have jumped in for the 6” SW, but having a nice 4” and 12” collection is best of both worlds. To me 6” seems to be the worst of both.

agreed. 6" is good for dioramas but you can't get vehicles despite their efforts.
4" is what my kids go to for playing
