As far as scale goes, I recall Kurt Bozigian explaining that kids who played with 3 3/4" figures tended to be older, while larger scales like He-Man and TMNT (5.5" I think) began to be played with by kids at a much younger age. And that overall Joes were played with over a shorter timeframe.
And if the ages at which kids tend to play with toys skews younger these days, as I've heard it suggested, then I suppose a larger scale might make sense, for a kid-oriented line. However, Bozigian also said that he would try to launch multiple lines simultaneously, aimed at the different markets. Somewhat like sbartek74 suggested. |

However, Bozigian also said that he would try to launch multiple lines simultaneously, aimed at the different markets. Somewhat like sbartek1974 suggested. What I mean by that is attributing age range of the consumers specifically and exclusively to the scale of the toys is a leap of logic without a multi-scale comparison within the same IP. TMNT and He-Man were never done in 1:18 as far as I know, so how do you know it was the size that brought them in younger? Perhaps the shows themselves for those two properties appealed to kids at a younger age and it had nothing to do with an extra inch and a half of figure height. Maybe it had something to do with small "choking-hazard" pieces with Joes. Maybe it was simply a perceived difference in value from the parents doing the shopping and the kids didn't have much to do with the decision. Who knows? I can't say for sure. At best, you can only say "maybe" the figure height had a bearing on the age of the consumer. But there are other reasonable explanations that could also apply and I think one or two of them make more sense than simply comparing figure heights. That just seems like a pretty arbitrary factor. If not, if taller figures are a defacto requirement for young children, how can we account for the "Imaginext" figures? They're WAY under 5.5" and kids do just fine with them. Itty-bitty kids need somewhat simplified articulation and parts that don't fall off of the figures if a breeze hits them. Beyond that, I don't see any special needs that would have to run against what an adult collector might also like. Scale change seems, to me, to be utterly unnecessary. I'm pretty sure they'll do it, but it's a move that doesn't need to be done as far as I can tell. It absolutely will reduce market participation from adult collectors and from kids who are already familiar with Joe in its current scale (which would be the kids of probably most of the collectors). It kills the vehicle market (whatever is left of it) as well. If you don't HAVE to sacrifice those segments of the market, it's best not to do so. Speaking of the vehicle and play set market, Imaginext also proves there is still child demand for both, doesn't it? Shouldn't that be a factor in the planning of scale?

I do think it'll have to be both. As yeet said, all the lines now have a "kid" line and a "collector" line, so I'd expect we get that with Joe too.
As for media, I think they should try to follow the Transformers path: a kids cartoon and movies skewing older (broadly speaking) |

I think it should be focused on ANYTHING at this point. Kid, adult, both, pick one, all, I don't care. Focusing on nothing doesn't seem to be working anymore.

I think it should be targeted for both.
I have bought my nephews Joes in the past as an attempt to garner interest and they liked them. It would probably work best to have a high grade collector line accompanied by a kids line.

^^^^^ Exactly this. Have 2 lines geared specifically for kids and collectors. Transformers currently does this with great success.

When did this kid-adult dichotomy begin anyway? At least as far as toys are concerned. I used to be a kid and would have scoffed at the “kids’ lines” they put out today. I don’t really get why there has to be separate lines. Even my 5 year old son isn’t into 5POA. He instinctively knows he’s getting jipped. (I assume a kids line will be 5POA or something equally useless).

Us: "There just aren't enough of us around to keep a toy line afloat. We need new blood."
Also us: "There should be two lines, one for the kids and one just for us!" In addition to a bifurcated product line being (in my opinion) a strategically weak plan, it's also logically inconsistent with the popular going theory around here about why GI Joe is no longer present at retail in the first place. I continue to not understand this line of thinking.
