The last Joes at retail were less than 20 for a loaded out 2 pack. It hasn’t been that long to expect $15 single cards.

What you’re saying is bull crap as well. Marauder can make money off of figures (reusing the same few molds) that sell for at least $20. Jazwares makes $13 figures with no accessories. Also, TVC is the only 4” Star Wars line, is full of repacks, have barely any accessories, and cost on average $14 a figure. Detailing and quality control is much easier on 5” and 6” because of their size, further reducing the gap between the prices of 4” and larger scales. The larger scales also have much simpler packages, because since their bigger they don’t need big cards. If GI Joe was to make PoC style figures today, they’ll cost around $16 a piece. As a non Joe fanatic consumer, would you buy one repack of a small figure for $16, or a highly detailed super articulated 6” for $20?

Also, the 5-inch SW figures - which required 100% new tooling and have plenty of paint apps and are nearly super-articulated as well - are priced at something like $11 around here (again, despite a licensing fee to Disney). You'll need to explain how that's possible, but 4" figures in a non-licensed line must necessarily cost $16, 'cause I don't see how that follows. Their production numbers would have to be WAY lower for a loss of quantity discounts to absorb all of the money saved on the lack of licensing fees. It's pretty clear that Hasbro thinks they can make money on a 5" line at that price point which is why they're floating it to see what consumer response is. I've posted about this basic idea before in more detail elsewhere, but the point is that the available evidence suggests to me that there was a (short-sighted) conscious choice made at Hasbro to kill off 1:18 intentionally in favor of 6". I do not believe it died of natural causes. Without any evidence whatsoever, I'm tacitly assuming this is Vala's fault because he's a 6-inch zealot and because it amuses me to do so. |

Not to pile on, but...
^This, plus the Assassin's Creed line from Jazwares had accessories and was priced at $9.99 per figure. It got tossed into a black hole when Fortnite licensing displaced it, but their price point on AC stuff was really decent and the figures were super-articulated and had a lot of paint apps and parts involved. Granted, the eyes were painted like total crap, but the figures were otherwise pretty darn good and a total steal at $9.99 despite being a licensed line. It can be done. I'm eagerly hoping for Jazwares to get back to it. I'm assuming the less-appealing cost of Fortnite figures is a result of less-appealing licensing fees for Jazwares to cover but I really can only assume that. In all likelihood there is also a component of brand visibility that they feel like they can cash in on at a higher rate than the old AC property. All I know is, whatever the cause, their immediately-preceding licensed line was priced way better. Bear in mind, Hasbro can crank out GI Joe stuff with zero licensing costs which should make it all the easier to keep costs around that same mark. And for us old timers who where around when 6 inches started to kill 4 inch, Hasbros first story was the 6 inch line was more collector oriented and the 3.75 or 4 inch line was more of a kids toy scale. Which made no sense since all collectors really had for the last few years was 1:18th. So how did Hasbro magically figure out collectors wanted something they weren’t getting - I’m sure they would say market research which I guess maybe they had. And then the whole it’s not cost effective story came out about the time Hasbro started making every scale but 1:18th. I mean they’ve dabbled in 7 inch, 5 inch, 2.5 inch and had success in 6 inch and I guess 12 inch. But they can’t be bothered to make 1:18th figures?

It's possible, just to get the new-scale line off the ground. But I seriously doubt that's what we're actually seeing. That's obviously not an approach that can be sustained indefinitely and consumers hate price increases. Ever wonder why companies across the board are downsizing products? They're putting less and less toilet paper on the roll or fewer and fewer chips in the bag, etc. They keep the price stable and downsize the contents specifically because they know people lose their shit when prices go up and they have discovered that this little ruse fools enough morons to stave off angry mobs...at least so far. Anyway, I don't see Hasbro going out of their way to create a price increase situation for themselves, but it's certainly possible.

In the last 2 years, 6" Star Wars and Marvel absolutely blew up in popularity. They're now definitively more popular than 4", so even tho I would prefer 4", to Hasbro it'd make the most sense to go 6", especially since people on sites like Toyark and The Fwoosh are constantly begging Hasbro for 6" Joes.
