I saw this documentary on NGC called Restrepo. It was about an Army outpost in Afghanistan. It appeared a few of the machine gunners had scopes. I'd think you'd use the scope to acquire the target at distance and use finger control to fire bursts without the excessive muzzle climb( never personally fired a machine gun).

Scarlett's file card says she went to sniper school and is qualified with the M700. Bullhorn - I don't know if Practical Shooting Champion includes sniping skills ( I think it is pistol competition), but if you go by his load-out, which includes one dedicated sniper rifle and what appears to be a modified barret .50 (or other large cal. rifle) bulpup with a sniper style scope. (I know there is a sniper rifle like it out there somewhere, but I can't find it now.) |

I think there is a redhead blackbelt that would like to have a few words with you. The cadre at the Marine Sniper School might want to join in, too. |

Always wondered about that. Makes a cool visual, though, which was probably the toy designers' primary concern at the time. At least the 25th Anniversary version of Tunnel Rat comes with what looks like a .38 caliber revolver (the weapon of choice of American and Australian tunnel rats during the Vietnam War).

But the bigger question by far is why was Tunnel Rat listed as an EOD in the original filecard? Almost all tunnel rats back in the day were combat engineers (including filecard writer Larry Hama). The EOD military occupational specialty didn't even exist back when tunnel rats were being used in Vietnam (IIRC, the current version of the specialty was "stood up" sometime in 1984 or 1985). Only explanation I can come up with was Hama wanted to put some distance between the character and himself (which probably partially explains why he also wrote Tunnel Rat as being of Chinese instead of Japanese descent, despite it being a 1:18 version of him). Although a simpler explanation is that the "Tunnel Rat" codename isn't meant to allude to the character's military specialty. Last edited by zuludelta; 01-14-2011 at 05:00 PM.. |

I know they used starlight scopes in Vietnam, but I thought that by the mid 80's they had developed scopes that did not rely on ambient light, like the infra-red scopes they have today. Does anyone know about this?

Active night-vision/image-intensification devices (such as IR scopes) for mounting on rifles have been in use by various military organizations since at least the mid-1940s. The problem with the old IR scopes is that they can lead counter-snipers to the sniper's position (i.e., anybody else using an active IR scope would be able to see the infrared light source mounted on the sniper's scope).

With Tunnel Rat's M60, I think the bigger issue is the amount of noise and flash more than controllability. Vietnam War tunnel rats (and Soviet tunnel rats during their invasion of Afghanistan) preferred revolvers because they generated far less muzzle flash (which could temporarily blind them in the dark tunnels) and noise (which could cause permanent hearing loss in such an enclosed space) than any semiautomatic or fully automatic blowback-operated weapon. If a compact selective-fire weapon that had the double-action revolver's muzzle flash and sound characteristics existed back then, I think tunnel rats would have used it over their six-shooters.
But the bigger question by far is why was Tunnel Rat listed as an EOD in the original filecard? Almost all tunnel rats back in the day were combat engineers (including filecard writer Larry Hama). Although a simpler explanation is that the "Tunnel Rat" codename isn't meant to allude to the character's military specialty. So later they came out with the silent handgun--a compact, six-shot cylinder-loaded, exposed hammer, selective double-action, modified Smith & Wesson .44 magnum weighing 38 ounces. It fired a special 15-pellet bullet with a shotgun-esque shot pattern. But by this time the Rats were too accustomed to using riot shotugns and the Colt .45. So the magnum didn't get much play. Some used a .25 Berreta and one Rat had an M-2 carbine with folded paratrooper stock.

But the kits proved a disaster: the .38 with silencer was still too long to maneuver with. The kits were not well liked as other malfunction occurred.

There are IR scopes but keep in mind that there weren't any Tunnel Rat positions after the war ended either. TR the character is really an anachronism so I assumed his weapon was also an anachronism of the war--an M60 with Starlight Scope, which wouldn't have worked in a tunnel. Too long and no ambient light. But TR's design also suggested that his role is that of an ambusher. He could set up an ambush in front of an exit and wait for the quarry. There's just no way he's squeezing in a hole with an M60 and that huge mule pack he came with!
