The Spider-Man spinoff flopped after Sony Pictures estimated a $15.2 million weekend and a six-day $25.8 million haul. The film's numbers fell behind Sony's most recent superhero effort, "Morbius," which had a $39 million domestic opening weekend. - https://www.usatoday.com/story/enter...r/72671094007/
Madame Web producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura defends the decision for Dakota Johnson's Marvel film to not make any larger connections to Sony's Spider-Man Universe. Before I was involved there was a script, and before S.J. was involved as well. Both of us really saw the advantage in not having the burden of the attachment of all this other stuff that has gone on. but it really freed us in a way to tell a pure story, - https://screenrant.com/madame-web-sp...Man%20Universe. Anybody notice a trend here? Not saying that Madame Web connecting to the other Spider-Man movies would have helped, (or it was necessary to tie them together for a good film,) but bruh, it seems to me (and correct me if I'm wrong,) that every time LdiB tries to "freestyle," and come up with his ideas for these types of films the movie is "meh," the film isn't any good or the shit just straight up bricks. Mind you didn't ole boy say that he doesn't like the idea of a Cinematic Universe? I don't know where LdiB's talents as a film producer lies but it's painfully apparent that turning legacy i.p.s into what the early MCU was is something that is beyond his scope and skillset.

A bad movie will be a bad movie regardless of how it connects to something else. Di Bonaventura is a plague on the industry.

How many movies do we need about the same character? I read Sony needs to make a new one every five years to keep the license, but I don't think the world needs a new Spider Man movie that often.

sony shouldnt have spiderman anymore. they really lucked out getting his movie rights at bargain prices when marvel was going bankrupt.
but what goes around comes around, and hopefully disney buys it because sony just keeps producing spiderturd after spiderturd and movies that "arent related to the other property" and then haphazardly "making it related to the other property at the last minute" and then wondering why their movies are bombing. see not just the not spiderman movies, but also ghostbusters 2016 that wasnt related to ghostbusters at all and "my own thing" until a ridiculous amount of negative press made them toss in some stupid throw away "what's zuul" in the original firehouse interior at the end to connect it. yeah, a lot of it's failure was the women from the incels, but the other part that seriously gets downplayed is: bad ideas like that that feig had and his script. i literally dont care if they made the all cast women, the idea to not connect it throughout the process, and still call it ghostbusters and then when they see the movie was no good to connect it to the original movies was a stupid move. was it a reboot? no. was it not a reboot? also no. and then they twisted people's arms (bill murray who is difficult and didnt want to do it because he insisted on not making a sequel unless he thought "it was right"; threatened under some kind of contract thing to do it and he sat the whole time). take the original ghostbusters and references out like they wanted to from the get go and the movie doesnt have the legs or merit to stand on it's own. watch interviews when they put the whole cast on the screen, the original group outside of ackroyd look bored and pissed off they have to be there promoting it. they pretty much created their own negative press completely on their own. this is an ongoing sony problem. conversely, ghostbusters afterlife is what you get when you make a movie that both is a sequel and a reboot the right way. you put people on it that give a shit. i dont know who was behind allthese decisions to make that movie but they did it right. if amy pascal's name is on it, holy shit, she must have totally went hands off and lived on margaritas on the beach throughout the process. it was such a great movie. |

That's the main issue... these people are not fans of, nor have any knowledge of, these franchises. I think I saw an interview with one of Madame Web's writers, who stated that she has no origin story. And I'm like... "tell me you don't read comics, without saying you don't read comics".
Also, is Madame Web really a character you want to build a film around? She's a D-list character, at best. This should have been Jessica Drew's movie.

Yes Madame Web flopped. I have not seen it yet.
*BUT* Far From Home, No Way Home, and Across the Spiderverse were all home run hits. And I enjoyed all 3 of those movies. The problem here is not "too many spiderman movies" or "Sony can't make a good movie". Just wanted to clear that up. And young folks are anxiously awaiting the sequel to Across the Spiderverse. I'm curious to hear from someone who has actually seen Madame Web, to hear just how bad it was, and what its failings are.

the three Tom Holland movies were successes because Marvel Studios made them as the production company and Sony just distributed them, in the same way MS made Iron Man 1 and 2, Thor and Captain America and Paramount distributed them and MS made Incredible Hulk and Universal distributed that.
the SPUMC movies have the same problem as the FoX-Men movies, they're frequently being made to keep the rights and by people who don't care about the characters. The same problem that frequently afflicts other adaptations. Sometimes there's execs with too much power (Avi Arad is another) wielding too much influence (as he did on Spider-Man 3) other times it's people who don't respect the source material (Simon Kinberg, Bryan Singer) and make mistakes. |
