Watched it today, got curious after seeing mixed feedback here. Disclaimer: I'm not a huge spiderman/superhero fan...read the popular Marvel comics as a kid (I missed the Spiderman issues with Madame Web in it), but I'm not passionate about the genre as an adult.
The movie makes a lot more sense than the trailer does. There's a millennial/gen z dynamic happening with the leads and creative choices. Most characters of significance are women or teenage girls. Gen X tastes aren't being catered to at all, and the gender choices are going to annoy people who get disturbed about that kind of thing...not surprised it's getting the reaction it is. There's a fair amount of dialog about trauma and feelings, and little obvious connection to the parts of the Spider-Man universe that I'm familiar with. There are spiders that grant superpowers, a spiderman-like-villain, and a throwaway line about great power/great responsibility but no spiderman or recognizable villains. It isn't a bad movie, but I think it's targeted squarely at Gen Z young women and you could substitute the spider origin and costume with some other critter and tell nearly the same story. It doesn't feel like it's trying to appeal to a wide audience, maybe this was a better fit for a smaller budget? Decent cast, OK story, under-two-hour runtime. I didn't hate it, but I don't think it was anything special either. Last edited by SpottedEagleSvn; 02-23-2024 at 01:25 PM.. |

Is it a bunch of cgi nonsense. I hate when movies are just a bunch of computer generated garbage with no real plot or decent acting?

I actually didn't even know this movie was being made or had come out until some FB feeds bashing it. Pulled up the trailer and couldn't get through it. Justy not interesting to me.

if there's one thing that is true about gen x is they're the forgotten generation.
now imagine what it's like to be called gen y your whole life until some dope decided to push "millennial" into the vernacular and pull you into that bullshit to justify it. |

Styled appropriately to play an high school student in a PG-13 action/thriller. She's attractive, but you might be disappointed if you want something beyond that.

I get it...big demographic...sometimes you take a risk on an idea like selling dolls to boys by calling them action figures to try to market outside of your core audience. Same time, my 15-year-old daughter had never heard of Madame Web. Her favorite movies are things like The Virgin Suicides and Dead Poets Society. She loves comics/graphic novels, but not cape books. They're not going to make any money trying to sell her on an action/thriller based on old Marvel superhero IP. Clueless? yep. |
