The lead choice is going to ruffle a few feathers... but I'm still excited to see it.
THE ROCKETEER is Getting an Overdue Sequel | Nerdist Quote:
After 25 years, The Rocketeer will once again take flight on the big screen. But this new Rocketeer isn’t anyone that you’ve seen before!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney’s Rocketeer reboot will be called The Rocketeers, and it will introduce an African-American female character who will step up to become the new Rocketeer after the original hero, Cliff Secord, disappears during World War II. Given that the title is The Rocketeers, we wouldn’t be at all surprised if Secord shows up later in the story to formally pass the torch. But since the time frame is only six years after the original film, it may mean that Billy Campbell won’t reprise his title role. All we know about our new leading lady is that she is also a pilot, and that she becomes the Rocketeer to protect the jetpack technology from “an ambitious and corrupt rocket scientist” at a potential “turning point in the Cold War.” Disney hired screenwriters Max Winkler and Matt Spicer to write the new script as a way to differentiate The Rocketeers from Marvel’s Iron Man. And yet it looks like Marvel still beat them to the punch, since it was recently announced that a black teenage girl named Riri Williams will soon be taking over the role of Iron Man from Tony Stark. The Rocketeer is based on a comic book by the late Dave Stevens and is considered to be a classic. Joe Johnston directed the 1991 cinematic adaptation of The Rocketeer, which was not a success upon its initial release. However, that movie has gained a massive following which helped convince Disney to revisit the franchise two decades later.

Disney hasn't disappointed much over the past few years, so I'm game. I actually just caught the original on TV recently and was impressed by how well it holds up. It's a good, fun flick.

LOL, I'm going to assume this "recasting" of the character has no basis in the original comic books and is more Hollywood political correctness run amuck. The idea of having characters PLANNED to be switched to different genders or races is offensive. It specifically means we're not being color blind or gender blind, but that we ARE showing a bias towards one or the other. Not such a big deal when you're creating a new character, but when you change a character who was already able to be identified with by an audience, and now say some other audience is more important to you than they are, that's a direct insult.
There's nothing wrong if there is some specific actor that seems so right for the role that they can be cast even if they're a different race or gender from the original character, a la Nick Fury or Perry White in the recent movies. Being color-blind in casting is a fair move, although we all know it would never happen in the other direction, with a black character being played white. But when you simply put pen to paper and say this character now HAS to be a different race or gender than it was before, that is always offensive and insulting. Disney has actually had as spotty a record as anyone on live-action, with John Carter, Prince of Persia, Lone Ranger, Tron Legacy, Force Awakens and Alice Through the Looking Glass to name a few in recent years. Lone Ranger is the best one of that bunch as far as I'm concerned, but most of those releases had problems with critics or box office. TFA, obviously not, but I'm in the camp that found it disappointing and reinforces Disney's weak live-action efforts. Marvel Studios, I'm not counting, since they were already formed before Disney bought them and Disney didn't create that division themselves. Last edited by JediJones; 07-28-2016 at 07:19 PM.. |

Marvel Studios, I'm not counting, since they were already formed before Disney bought them and Disney didn't create that division themselves. Four people liked The Rocketeer when it first came out. Then eight more liked it twenty years later. They could change the character to be a transgender albino midget and they'd still get a better return than they did with the first movie. There is no property out there that is immune to change, nor should there be. If they decide to replace Ben Affleck with a black actor in a few years, it won't change the history of the character, it just adds to it. |

I actually saw The Rocketeer in cinemas back in 1991. It was the first movie I ever saw at a cinema, therefore it holds a special place in my heart.

The Rocketeer was a great period adventure tale directed by Joe Johnston who directed another great period adventure piece, Captain America: The First Avenger. The same heart and fun in Cap is evident in The Rocketeer.

I absolutely loved the Rocketeer when it came to theaters. I was probably the only one to see it more than once. This is awesome news.

I remember going to the theater to see it as well. I remember wishing the character was a little more badass, but other than that, I really liked it.
