Remember, very low production numbers = much higher cost per unit. There is a real, tangible up-front cost to prepare and start up a production line that is totally irrespective of the costs for tooling development. If you are making 100,000 units, the amortized start-up cost per unit is negligible. If you are making 750 units, it becomes quite high.

Trump is a blow-hard. He is a TV personality and CEO who has sat on millions while his Casinos have filed chapter 11 at least twice that I can remember. Let him put his money where his mouth is and open a toy manufacturer right here in America.
Im as American as you can get: My bloodline runs 10 thousand years-plus on this continent (Im Mohawk & Maliseet) and I support this country 100%. I always try and buy American when I can, but at the same time there are things we cant get made in America. Im also not rich so I cannot afford to pay more for those items. At the same time Im pro capitalism and think businesses should be able to make the most amount of money possible as long as they arent breaking the law or hurting people. Simple fact is, toys are made overseas because Americans WONT pay more. I dont buy any current toys because theyre too damn expensive, and you can blame that on lawyers, lawsuits and Unions. Unions used to be a good thing, now they are nothing more than a bunch of organized, pocket-lining bullies. My wife is FORCED to be in the Union and pay Union dues whether she likes it or not (she is a teacher). Those big 3 are the reason that capitalists move their manufacturing overseas. People wont strike, people wont sue and the company wont get sued. Yes, a lot of their standards arent up to ours (blame that on lawyers and unions) and I feel bad that there are people forced to work for a few dollars an hour or even less, but those people NEED the money and their priorities are usually QUITE different than your average Americans. People in America WONT work for peanuts because they NEED their cell phone, their plasma TV, their expensive cars, etc. People would rather collect a welfare check than work at McDonalds. Its like in Christmas vacation when Clark says "In seven years he couldnt find a job!?" And Ellen says "Catherine says hes holding out for management." THATS AMERICA! (I know Im over simplifying it, but its basically the truth). Americans are sending the jobs overseas themselves by demanding outrageous wages, going on strike, suing and being sued. Its a vicious cycle that doesnt have an end in sight. Last edited by bigvig; 11-05-2010 at 02:16 PM.. |

To the OP...hell yes, I would definitely pay more for toys if it meant creating more Jobs here in the U.S.
To stick to the rules, I'll keep this completely unpolitical.... We need to start manufacturing for the future. Sure, we could easily bring back our mills, our production facilities, etc...and anything would be better than how it is now. If buying a Joe for $8 means that someone is feeding their family tonight, then count me in for at least 2 of each. |

besides all this we would never tax china for imports, they make too much money selling to us and we owe them too much money in return. i believe this is one reason they have as many manufacturing contracts as they do. There country scratched ours by buying billions in toxic bonds and in return they get to make product to sell in the states with little to no import tax.
its how the world works

Anybody catch Donald Trump on Fox last night? He had some amazing ideas on how to create jobs but one of the first examples he gave was about toys. He said (more or less) "Toys. why are all the toys made in china? Why don't we make toys here in Alabama for example. Labor is cheaper over there, I know. But what if we slap a 25% tax on toys we bring in from China? Plus the standards over there are lower and we run the risk of kids getting lead poisoning and such. Make toys in america."
I'm sure he said it better but I found it interesting and wonder, who'd be willing to pay more for Joes if it meant more americans could go back to work? Would you? Sadly though, and I think Mr. Trump realizes this, Donald knows that is an overly simplistic way of looking at the problems in our economy. It makes very much sense in black and white, straight forward speak, but it isn't as easy as just saying we'll tax the toys to put China out of business on our shores. China is emerging as the largest and most wealthy economy on the planet. |

Well, there's no political discussion allowed, so any form is too much. No worries though, let's just move forward..perhaps change the theme of the discussion. What benefits (other than job growth, of course) would we as consumers have if toys were made here? Do you think it would have an impact on the growth of the segment? Because quite honestly, "the death of the line" is the lose of imaginations. Kids don't go outside to play with toys anymore, they stay inside to play xBox or whatnot. (well, the majority, not all, of course). Now, if we're talking creation of jobs, we as a whole should start looking in to tech sectors. That's where the future of manufacturing has always been and it doesn't seem as we here in the U.S. are catching up to our friends around the World in that category. |

(I changed "would" to "could", cause even if we would, we still couldn't.)
