As has been said, as long as it's done in good taste, I can accept seeing 9/11 incorporated into entertainment media. As for what's in good taste, that is subject to individual opinion I suppose.

All that is said is inappropriate until the war on terror is over. I will assume this thread was just made in bad taste or as a joke and not assume people here have gotten that complacent to really think we still do not have troops dying over there trying to get this guy.
Once every soldier is home and the those responsible are brought to justice, then you can have your 911 toys. Like some of our leaders said at the time "Everyday after September 11th is September 12th".

Facepalm!
So must begin the needless dramatics and foot-stomping in the grandstand. Thank you for proving my point. Tell me Mr. Whom, how up in arms do you get over a Red Skull figure that actually has on a swastika armband? |

Well, much like Cobra Commander the RS is a fictional character. He is just part of a real organization from history. So I guess the question is, in this vein of thinking, would it be okay to make "generic muslim extremist toys" for toy soldiers to combat. Personally? Yes. However, as far as the general public is concerned? I'm not so sure. However, making a OBL figure now, would be like making Hitler toys in the 50's. Then again, the world then was a much different place.

Pearl Harbor has never been anything but the Japanese attack on it. Even all the WW2 comics and the DC and Marvel heroes that were active during WW2 have never been involved with Pearl Harbor. As far as I know, there have never been any time travel plots where Hydra, Dr. Doom, Lex Luthor, Kobra (DC's version of Hydra), AIM or any of the other villians have ever gone back to participate in Pearl Harbor. 9/11 should be the same way. The events get mentioned but not in the context of the super heroes/villians being involved in any way. BTW, Dynamite's The Boys (which started at Wildstorm), by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, does have a 9/11 story that is central to the book. BUT they changed it so the Towers stand, but it was the Brooklyn Bridge that got destroyed. They do a good job illustrating what happens when super heroes got involved, at least the Heroes of The Boys world.

Cobra has fronted terrorist organizations, but they've never been real organizations and have been parodies or real organizations. Quote:
It's a good example of throwing real world events into a comic. We're supposed to believe that villians like Dr. Doom, Kingpin and Magneto would be crying over the tragedy? After what we've read about their "exploits". Should have left the villians out of it and it would have been a great tribute issue. Also, it was John Romita Jr.s choice to make Doom cry, not JMS.

Here's the thing, stuff like that should always be portrayed how it really happened. It's been talked about, but to make it fictionalized cheapens the tragedy.

Want to read a good comic that just came out that has 9/11 has a pivotal moment?
REVIEW: Our Army At War Our Army At War, a special done by DC as a homage to the series from the past. Just came out last week. It's incredibly well done. Shows a soldier in WW2 and juxtaposes that with a soldier in Afghanistan, who joined due to the events of 9/11. The narrative weaves in and out from the two time periods. Good stuff.

If IDW Joe was to introduce a character, or use one of the Fobbits like Downtown or Brainstorm, as the center of their September issue next year it could work. Write the issue as normal. Have the soldier in question go on leave and take a roadtrip, and one of the core Joes, or Dialtone accompany him. Have them talk, get to know each other. At the end, they arrive at groundzero where the soldier pays his respects, and we see how that single incident forged their resolve to become a soldier, and a Joe. Meanwhile, on the Cobra side, it could be intercut with scenes involving Destro making an arms deal where the buyer ends up not having the cash to play on his level. He could reference the events leading up to 9/11 where a middle eastern terrorist cell approached him and tried to take him for his wares. He could recount how he dispatched of their agent, as he deals with the current "buyer". It would allow the events of 9/11 to touch the Joe universe, without any of the Joes or Cobras having to touch the event itself, or give us against type "remorseful" villains. Destro would have no problem selling to a terrorist group. Though targeting innocents instead of military would be something he might be disgusted with, he would likely still sell. However, someone wasting his time, and trying to strongarm him would be a definite reason for him to deal with them harshly. In the Joe-verse, Destro would be a person of interest to terrorist groups, however his elite status and the fact that Cobra is so out of everyone elses league would give him reason to characteristically look down his nose at them.
