Unfortunately with the current economic state - especially high gas prices and housing/credit crisis we are going to see some noticable inflation - brace yourselves for it. Unfortunately the Fed loan rate decrease which is designed to stimulate the economy will take some time. Effectively it is another way of giving more money to the rich, and until they feel comfortable the working class folks like us won't see benefit. Unless we are in unions like the truck drivers.

There was a report here today that some truckers had blocked off part of I-55 up by Chicago and were picketing. I didn't see it myself. My wife told me about it.

You know, I can't blame them, especially owner-operators. These guys make $1.25 to $1.50 (on average) per mile in a vehicle that get 5 to 7 miles per gallon, and are paying upwards of $4 a gallon for fuel. That doesn't include all the other expenses like the astronomical insurance they have to carry. I pity any O-Os on the road.
As for a strike, I don't know how much good it will do. There are a LOT of trucking companies that are not union. I'm afraid that striking may do them more harm than good. There's always fresh meat for the recruiters out there. Also, blocking the interstates won't help their cause much, either. You have a metric ass-ton of people that use the interstate to get to work everyday, myself included. You also have all the non-union truckers out there, too. I don't feel it's scabbing if you're not in a union to begin with. Trucking is a VERY cut throat business, and something like this will severely hurt it IMO. I wish them luck. I know it a tough job and hard work, I've done it.

Someone has to take a stand and say "enough is enough." Over the Road Drivers are the backbone of this country. Unless you are buying all your goods from a local supplier...odds are 95% was hauled to the store by a truck...and alot of them are Owner Operators. As for contract drivers...their rates are locked in by the managing company...so when fuel goes up, so does the freight rates. I work at a Steel Service Center...and I see the freight rates. So far this year...they have increased 4 times. Costs go up...so do rates, rates go up...so do prices. Bottom line...the consumer foots the bill, but we all know this...price of everything has gone up alot of the last couple years.

To tell you the truth I just wish everyone, I mean everyone in the U.S. should all go on strike for one day. Call up your jobs tell them your not going in to work that day. Don't go to the store, don't get gas, don't do anything that the F'in government is going to make money that day. I say the best day to do it would be Memorial day. So the government cant remember that we the people have had it with this government's ways.

Good for the truckers....Hell e all should do something....I mean gas is going up and up and UP. Every week its higher. All the while the guys at the oil company keep making 3 to 4 billion dollars a year. They could afford to cut their salary by one billion and still make money which in turn would bring gas down. But you know Bushs "War On Terror" was the reason the gas went up in the first place.
Just Imagine hunting for GI Joes this summer when gas is $4.00 here and $5.00 dollars over on the west coast. Then because gas is so high prices will go up (movies, food, cost of living, and our hobby will go up again) My GF works for Walmart and she told me that if things keep going the way they are....Our Joes, Star Wars, Transformers will be jacked up another dollar. She works for the home office by the way and was informed this on Weds. Not just the toys will go up in Walmart, but the whole store........... |
