theNAMmagazine unintentionally got me thinking about this in the Classified thread, but it's too off-topic so I'm going to throw it at the wall here and see if it sticks.
What are your favorite frugal life-hacks? Not necessarily the cheapest possible solutions, but the ones that make the most financial sense looking at money out v/s utility in. My favorite is using double edge safety razor/blades for shaving. 100 blades for under $10 USD. There's a small learning curve compared to using a more expensive blade cart, but I get just as good of a shave with one of these now. Runner up: An MVNO wireless brand. Not trying to promote any specific company here, but the service is just as good as the big brand I had prior. It should be, since it's the same coverage/towers, etc. The big wireless companies don't use all of their capacity and don't want to cut their prices for everyone, so the excess capacity they do have gets sold cheap to resellers to try to sell instead. |

Curious about what inspired this.
For me, the big thing was dropping 1:6 for 1:12, and really looking at what fills the collecting hole. MEZCO's 1:12 are great (I've already rebought most of the SSC horror figures in 1:12... thanks MEZCO), but something like Joe - that void, for me, is perfectly filled by Classified. The fact that you can get 3-4 for the price of a MEZCO also weighs on it, too. I'm just glad that most of MEZCO's "stylized" Marvel stuff looks like overpriced MEGOs. Outside of that, it's mainly waiting for films to hit streaming or Bluray (preferably the latter). The movie experience isn't what it used to be, with tickets at an all time high and most theatres just offering passes if you complain about seat kicking and/or incessant cell usage during the film... like, why would I want to come back and deal with the same shit for a different movie?! Saves me a small fortune on concessions, too! Also, I'd say food. Example: Sure Little Caesars' isn't as good as Mountain Mike's, but it scratches the pizza itch and leaves you with $$$ for more figures.

Ditch cable and satelite tv. Every major network has a local over the air station that can be picked up with a cheap antenna hooked up to the back of any HDtv made since 2005 and most have 4-5 substations broadcast on the signal dedicated to different genres. There's substations dedicated to weather, music, several classic tv channels, movies, history, reality tv etc... Its like cable back in the 80s and 90s but all free over the air, cable and satellite selection nowadays is horrible compared to whats free over the air by the local network affiliates. Combine it with free streaming services like Pluto or many of the others available for more options.

Movies: I had an AMC A-List Pass for a while and was going once or twice a week, but cut it when fewer things were coming out that I wanted to see when my cost started to be break-even with just buying a ticket once in a while. Worth it if you want to go a lot and have discipline to stay out of the snack bar.
Cable: Cut landline phone and pay TV ages ago. Have an antenna, but mostly just stream or download now. Erotica: I'm OK with supporting artists like Vex Ashley who are doing interesting work occasionally, but a lot of that is either local or niche. Razor talk It's dumb, but razor blades led to one of those initial "huh" moments when I realized I was paying far too much some something because of popularity/advertising. |

AFA other areas of my life, the main thing is that I don't have kids, but I also daily shop to reduce food waste, cook at home, really only eat whole, unprocessed foods (WAY cheaper), and the only sub service is Prime. Lastly, I don't drive, because I don't need to- my work commute is a six minute walk from door to door, and aside from that, I walk on average 70-80 miles a week to help stay fit. Thinking on it, the only real financial sink here is action figures, and as I run out of space, the end of that is rapidly approaching.

I could probably write a book.
Car payments tend to be one of people's largest expense. Unless you're really living well off, you shouldn't be buying a brand new (0 miles) vehicle. (Granted there was an exception to this rule for a year or two around covid when used car prices went crazy). Ideally look to purchase a vehicle 2-4 years old with 15,000-50,000 miles on. Use a good online vehicle search engine, and search a wide area, about 150 mile radius. Do your research, and start negotiating over email. If a dealership refuses to talk "out the door" price over email, move onto to the next one. Every vehicle I've ever purchased, I had the "out the door" prices agreed upon before stepping foot at the dealership. (You can always back out of the deal if you get to the dealership and there is a problem with the vehicle). And get your own financing ahead of time. If I told you some of the vehicles I've purchased, and the prices I paid for them, you would probably call me a damn liar.

This is odd, because as far as facial hair goes, I'm pretty hirsute (I often joke that my hairlines are actually getting closer together), but I can actually get some three months out of the Fusion carts. I save even more by only using hot water.

Makes sense. I'm the same way. I don't need something with 9,000,000 blades to shave. So long as the blade is clean and not dull, those cheap bags of razors easily do the trick - although right now I'm working my way through a box of Harry's that I got for Christmas.
