I have to kinda agree with Slice. He has some friends who went downhill. Who defends these homeless vets?
I'm not saying the gov uses and throws away troops, but if they did. Why so many homeless vets? Anyways, I need to leave this alone. Just wanted my 2 cents worth. |

Wow, A lot of opinions. I support the troops for the job they do but I dont really agree with what they do all the time. My father was a marine and several relatives served as well. I dont jump up and down though when I meet a vet. I dont thank them for ones service though I may nod out of respect. I have thanked older vets though from World Wars, etc. I just feel like there is a difference in some ways in how some carry themselves than those of today. I see a lot of them with decals on their trucks, t-shirts, hats, etc. You dont see that with the older generation. Maybe they have stuff in their house and they have the vet hat they wear on veterans day but that's about as far is it goes.
We are not the world police and we are not really the strongest country in the world overall (Not talking just military) either anymore. That would go too China and we are like number 2 or 3 now. You can look that up. This country tosses troops to the side when they come home as someone stated. The VA is horrible. They are trying to make it better but it still sucks for them when they return home. I honestly have more respect for those that join, do the 4 years or whatever, and come home. No mention of what they did or where except maybe in passing. Those that write books about it like Chris Kyle I feel are wanting something. I seen some that treat this guy like he is the second coming of god. The real heroes dont need to be recognized for it. They recognize they did a job and move on. I have talked too vets before and some of them do agree about the stuff I mentioned. A lot of them like Trump though but some cant stand the guy and thinks he makes crap decisions but go with it because they have too. It is easier to talk to the vets who went in after high school to pay for college because they seem to have more of a open mind about it then some of those that the military roots go way back in the family and had it drilled into their heads since they where kids that the military was the be all end all of everything and they had no other choice but too join up. Those guys get mad if you disagree with it and think you are betraying the country if you do. I think you are betraying the country is you don't question it. This country is a lot different then it used to be and it isn't really a good difference either. Instead of going forwards we are going backwards.

My opinion that we use the world hero too loosely in this country still stands. My main point I am trying to make though is that this country has a love affair with the military that is unneeded. That was the topic of my first post.

I have been lurking more than posting the last few months.
I am a retired Marine, 3rd generation armed forces, my daughter is fourth generation. I don't think anyone in the service thinks of themselves as heroes including ones who have done what might be considered heroic actions. Mostly, you are are thinking to yourself "thank god I didn't fuck that up". And being thanked for your service makes me personally feel uncomfortable. To be flippant about it, the taxpayer thanked me twice a month for my service. As far as spending, do you know what that money is spent on? There are of course news stories about expensive hammers and such, and we even have a term "fully burdened cost" which is for things like water or diesel fuel, as in, what is the fully burdened cost of a gallon of diesel in Afghanistan after it has been shipped, then trucked, then maybe helo'd to a FOB in the mountains? that gallon of diesel might be 98 bucks. Plus, our servicemen are well paid compared to the rest of the world. Therefore, we attract good people by and large. The days of "can't do anything else so I will join the service" are largely gone. Not to say people don't join for the college benefits or training, but that if you can't get into college, there is a reasonable chance you can't get into the service. Join the Marines or go to jail has not really existed during my service. Anyone who is eligible for enlistment probably has a fairly clean criminal history. Anyway, people cost money. Our equipment is expensive, because it has to work in all conditions and by and large, is built to last. And on cost, those dirty defense contractors ripping off the taxpayer? Yeah, they exist but they are a minority. I was a dirty contractor for a few years, but the company I worked for, I picked because they did great work for us when I was in the service. Our contract required that we develop cost saving measures that more than paid for the contract. Yes, there is waste, but a lot of that waste is the way our federal govt functions, not specific to DoD. DoD is just bigger than say DOT. The VA is a mess, but again, this is mostly because it is a part of the federal govt with civil service rules that make it nearly impossible to fire a civilian, even one who sucks balls and doesn't do their job. VA doctors do not have to meet state board requirements because they are federal so you get doctors who literally cannot work elsewhere. Saying that, I had some really good doctors too. I can only speak to my own experiences. I joined the service for two reasons: It looked fun and I couldn't afford college. I was never indoctrinated by my family even though I grew up with vets from WWI (yes, WWI) through Vietnam. I was like, I get to shoot guns, blow stuff up, jump out of planes, ride around in trucks and armor, travel the world, and you are paying me? Sign me up. Not patriotism or defending the world. I was also 17 and grew up on GI Joe and 80s action movies, not to mention every day with my relatives like my grandfather who fought in WWI and rode against Pancho Villa, an uncle who was one of the first paratroopers, an uncle that made 9 amphibious landings between WWII and Korea in the Marines, and another uncle who did two tours in Nam back to back because he thrived in combat, and then left the Army when he got back because he hated garrison life. I think many vets have these stories. The problem is, and frankly it is a good problem to have, is that relative to the population, we have very few people in uniform or who have worn the uniform. Many people, depending where they live, don't interact with a lot of veterans regularly. Our all volunteer force has a lot of volunteers from lower middle and middle class rural and small city suburb families, not so many from the upper middle class. Most of us are not R. Lee. Ermy throwing trash cans and screaming, or even the commander in Top Gun saying stuff like "your ego is writing checks..." Sorry for the long rant. |

I don't thank Vets for their service because, as hardcorps pointed out, every vet I know personally is made uncomfortable by it.
Beyond that, I see a lot of opinions that to me are dangerously close to taking service for granted. You don't have to call them heroes, and perhaps in many cases you shouldn't, but they do deserve appreciation.

I didn't serve but I come from a military family. Grandfather was career army, fought in WW2 and Korea, retired a Lt. Colonel. My dad was a Captain in the Air Force and served in Vietnam(well, they flew out of Thailand). My uncles, one was in the Army Reserves his entire life the other was career Army Corps of Engineers. My sister was a Lieutenant in the Marines and served in Iraq. My cousin is currently a Warrant Officer serving in Afghanistan. None of them would be comfortable being called 'heroes' and would probably roll their eyes if you said that to them. My grandfather in particular would have *hated* that.
I do think it's overdone, the lavishing of praise, and I question the motivations. Like I think people in the military deserve respect even if they were not in combat, because it's a difficult job and there is something endemic to serving that shows character that a lot of civilians lack. That said having served doesn't make you a good person, I've met a lot of otherwise scumbags who served and fought honorably. But I know this guy at work who was always going on and on about the 'heroes' thing, putting that black US flag on his Jeep, etc and no one in his family has ever served. He does it IMO because of his cultural affiliation and how his support for "the troops" reflects upon himself to the people he wants to impress. I sense that happens quite a lot. I see people with the Punisher logo on their cars and the black US flag and I think they just think it looks cool and maybe, just maybe fools people into thinking they themselves served. |
