So I've been thinking about toy scalping, and by that I mean the reselling of new toys bought at retail. Let's look at the retro FANG as an example. Some guy finds 4 FANGs at a Walmart and buys all 4 at an MSRP of $25 plus tax, let's call it $27. He then lists them on ebay for $50 each with free shipping. In his head, I guess he thinks he's doubling his money and it's worth it, but after shipping and assorted fees, he's not making enough per item to justify the time and gas spent. So he essentially took items out of the hands of consumers in his area just to make a couple of bucks. How is this worth it? Unless the dude is stealing them or getting a huge discount, it's the most inefficient way to make a buck I've ever encountered.

Coming from someone who's done a fair amount of re-selling..... vehicles (and other large items), specifically, are just not worth it. They're too expensive to ship and it eats up all your potential profits. So in that example, yeah, definitely not worth it. In the case of scalpers, (I think a lot of them are are possibly really bad at math), you have to be able to sell it for MORE than twice what it's worth to be able to turn a decent profit.

I think the real goldmine for scalping are certain figures due to the lower MSRP, the smaller size equaling less shipping cost and the weird scarcity for some of them driving up prices. I sold off a TVC Tank Driver and Commander and a couple of Crait Lukes for stupid money that surprised the shit out of me. I had no idea...I was just selling them to get rid of them. That, of course, was a year or so after release, so it's not like anyone knew these figures would be "RARE HTF!!!" when they first came out. I reckon it's all a stupid guessing game, and the real money isn't there until some time has passed...until they rerelease that toy and what used to command major bux suddenly becomes worthless. I wonder if some are addicted to the "game" of it? It's kinda like gambling, in a way.

I've had this go through my head a lot over the years as well. I could spend the time running around town trying to find stuff when it gets put on a shelf, buy it, photograph it, post it and maintain an auction for a week, pack it, drive to the post office and ship it,
or go into work for an hour of overtime and come out way ahead.

none of ebay makes sense to me. People still asking for a premium for the figures you can now get on Amazon or pulse no problem.
Part of me wonders if the recent sightings were not reatocks but just scalpers returning product they can't sell without taking a loss.
