I saw this technology a few years back and it seems to keep improving. They have actually used 3D printing to replicate organic compounds and even successfully printed a rat heart. It's amazing what is just around the bend.

I remember we had a "3D printed" version of one our Toyota Camry lower ball joints at work a few years ago. Very cool indeed.

I use one of those Z-scanners at work. It is pretty sweet. While the techonology for 3D prototyping has been around for quite some time (I remember having parts made over 10 years ago) this level of printing and strength is much better than what it used to be.

What really amazes me is when they "print" a complex mechanism with moving parts, already assembled. Wow.

Well, complex moving parts may still need some second hand assembly... But yeah Stereolithography is pretty much the next best thing to Star Trek. And it certainly has comea long way in a rather short period of time.
