Guys are getting slick on the bay:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-STA...SwOwJe0INFThis is a reproduction figure labeled as a vintage item. Notice the thicker card, tan figure card backing (in 82 it was orange or redish) and “damage”. Reported.

Those repro cards are getting better every year. With the price of vintage toys continuing to increase it is a lucrative gamble for cheats to find a decent figure and put in a repro card and sell it for hundreds of dollars.

I'm not a vintage MOC collector, but I do think that if you don't have actual proof, as in seeing it recarded, that you open yourself up to a world of legal ramifications if you cost the seller money and you're wrong. There are so many minute variations on all these things that without a documented chain of custody it's nearly impossible to say what is genuinely original and what has been restored or faked.

Most of the people I buy from will have a small disclaimer on the bottom of the back card that says something like, "Reprinted on custom card" or something. But not all of them.

How likely is it to find a vintage figure on card in that good of shape these days? Assuming it isn't fake, I'd immediately be suspicious just based on the condition. But I don't mess with vintage MOC stuff, so I don't really know.

Coming from the perspective of a loose-only collector, and thus not as familiar with the graphics of the cards, etc... What would've clued me in first was the fact that it's "punched" with little to no wear around the hang slot. Those were punched out in-store prior to hanging, as far as I'm aware. That would mean it was purchased within minutes of being hung, and then taken home and "preserved". In 1983.
Not impossible, but highly unlikely. |

At first glance, I was sure it was a legitimate moc figure. Looking at this photo instead no. The classic waffle texture of the old glue is also present on the card. This is very strange

Thanks for everyone who posted additional red flags.
@cobra Agent 66, yea the guys who sell reproduction items and have it printed on the card are the honest guys. Even if it’s not and they have it in their disclaimer same thing honest. Dude who are shit heads selling reproduction back cards as vintage are the guys to watch out for. Definitely needs to be a thread to be updated Becuase I’m starting to see more and more guys sell reproduction stuff. Nothing wrong with it as it’s very budget friendly but it needs to be sliced down the middle from what’s on it way to becoming vintage .
