True enough, but I personally believe that the rarer an item is, the less benefit there is to having it graded.
Someone who collects MOC GI Joe toys may be really picky about condition and willing to pay a premium price for a really high grade example. There are hundreds if not thousands of those out there, so there's almost always a chance of finding a nicer one. That's AFAs target market right there. They want to find people who are willing to pay inflated prices for really nice examples of common items. However, if someone wants a PDD but only 20-30 of them exist in ANY condition, how likely is it that this same buyer will care to pay a premium price (on top of the already high price tag for the item) to get a graded example? Very unlikely - the challenge for those ultra-rare pieces is in simply getting one. For these pieces, AFA grading makes a really nice display, but I don't think it adds that much to the value of the item itself. Here's a perfect example: I bought an AFA 80 Cobra Mortal a couple years ago. I believe at the time it was the highest graded example out there. It's also the only AFA piece in my collection. So why did I buy it? Because I actually paid less for it than I had seen ungraded Mortals sell for in the months leading up to that time.

As a followup to the PDD discussion: the other factor is that most of these figures were mint straight from Asia. It's not like they were sold at retail 30 years ago and most of them were beat to hell by kids who played with them. These sat in a warehouse until an enterprising person found them, sold them to US collectors directly and those collectors then packed them into bags, boxes or drawers and they've sat in the exact condition in which they were found. So, it's not that a high grade PDD is any rarer than the figure in general, just none of the other 100 or so people who have one have taken the time and expense to have theirs graded.

I will keep my unpopular opinions on the AFA to myself, but I will say that it seems way to easy to produce a fake PDD (especially a loose one), I would definitely caution anyone looking to buy one to do their due diligence in trying to authenticate it, and buy from someone they trust.

I bought a carded PDD for $2000 a year and a half ago and sold it for about $500 more. So Volleydan is pretty spot on with the current market value.
Still want a loose one, but I couldn't stand the fact that I had something that valuable that had glue that was slow dissolving off the card. No matter how much I would try to prevent it, I knew within five to ten years that carded PDD would be a loose one. For those of you who have a lot of 15th anniversary stuff, you know this is a major plague to carded collections of that era. Whatever glue they used on the bubbles was too sparingly applied or super cheap. |
