As a kid, and now much much later as an aging adult when I display or play with my Joes I almost always put them in small squads of 4-6 specialists. Characters like Snake Eyes( yes my favorite ) were almost always solo thanks to Larry Hama’s incredible issue 21. Although sometimes I paired him with Scarlett, or Spirit( think Sunbow cartoon ). Snake Eyes and Spirit were my recon duo. However, my favorite squad which I seemed to use more than anyone was 1. Flint, squad leader, 2. Roadblock, 3. Gung-Ho, and 4. Recondo. I absolutely loved those guys. Sometimes I would add additional guys to the squad like Low-Light or Dial-Tone, but these were my main four. Just thought they worked great together. My second squad I used not nearly as much, but still a lot was: 1. Duke, squad leader, 2. Beach Head 3. Stalker 4. Rock & Roll with Outback and Breaker often joining that team. What is awesome is everyone of my favorite Joe squad members will be made in 6”plastic form by next year! I can not wait! So who is your favorite squad of Joes?

I used to make Destro/Baroness and Flint/Lady Jaye double date. At some point in the evening shit would go down then they'd start fighting and others would join in. Eventually it was an all out war.

I'm going to give this some more thought because I know I had teams I liked, but off the top of my head I used the Special Missions: Brazil team as sort of the ultimate super team when things just got too rough (yeah, I know a team with Dial Tone and Mainframe is not exactly the most intimidating concept). I'd even have the regular figures "suit up" into the Brazil uniforms.
I also remember using Sci-Fi and Airtight as Ghostbusters. If I think of more I'll post them. |

I enjoyed the squad of Stalker, Roadblock, Gung Ho, Recondo, and Rip Cord, who went into Sierra Gordo to rescue Dr. Burkhart. That was a damn good squad.

Flint and Footloose were my main team. They would take out tons of Cobras, confiscate their weapons and keep going. They were later joined by a Frankensteined figure with a Footloose body and Monkey wrench head, or Chuckles head. Sometimes Flint would end up with a B.A.T.s arm.

Falcon led my squad of Fastdraw, Tripwire, Flash, Downtown, Covergirl, Stretcher and Armadillo ( since he drove the rolling thunder which was their ride. )

I mean, my peak collecting years as a kid was around 84ish to 88 or so, so the Joes in question are easy to pick out. Any Joe I owned was apart of my Joe Team. There really were no subteams, if I owned a Tiger Force fig, he was just a joe, same with any other subteam figure.
The closest to a 'squad' I had was Sarge and his Renegades who would do their own thing, kicking Cobras butts. Flint usually was my leader, Tiger Force Duke with wrong hair annoyed me and I knew, even as a kid, something was off with a snake through the heart resulting in a coma! Falcon was always trying to prove himself, Jinx basically became his 'boss' because she's the only one who could get through to him. Eariler figs fell with Flint, Sarge had his Renegades do the off the book stuff, Falcon was given leadership over newer figs. That's generally how I remember it going on. Flint and Lady Jaye drove around in the Super Powers Batmobile when I was a kid. That was my admittedly bad stand in for his car in the episode, Flint's Vacation. After the movie aired one night on WGN, my adventures picked up after the movie and Serpentor's snake was Cobra Commander, then he'd get the battle armor as some kind of mutation stabilizer he'd have to wear. In fighting would start up and GIJoe would have be caught in the middle. The Steel Brigade figure, I hated the code name I chose, so he was given a new name once I owned him, whom I used as a traitor to GIJoe, lol.. more fun to be a villain... its been along time so my memory is fuzzy. |

I now think of this as teams with non-team members added to the core team based on the mission:
Alpha Team: Stalker, Scarlett, Snake Eyes, Grunt and Breaker Bravo Team: Torpedo, Tripwire, Gung Ho, and Airborne Charlie Team: Duke, Roadblock, Recondo, Spirit and Ripcord Delta Team: Flint, Lady Jaye, Shipwreck, Dusty and Footloose Echo Team: Beachhead, Leatherneck, Wetsuit, Dialtone, and Lowlight Foxtrot Team: Lt Falcon, Outback, Tunnel Rat, Crazylegs and Sneak Peek Gulf Team: Shockwave, Hit and Run, Repeater, Spearhead and Muskrat Hotel Team: Capt Grid Iron, Ambush, Freefall, Rampart and Pathfinder Then mission specialist are added based on the threat or mission. |

I always kind of lumped them by year or wave, I guess since Roadblock and Gung-Ho were battle buddies in the comics, or Alpine and Bazooka in the cartoons.
But, of course, Navy SeALs hung out with the Navy guys, Army Rangers and Special Forces were a thing (I lumped them with the ninja folks), Gung-Ho and Leatherneck would naturally gravitate to one another in a unit with so many Army people around. Then you had your radio people, your medics, pilots, etc. |
