There's still plenty of o-ring fans but from browsing here it seems the majority have gone to retro collecting instead of taking interest in Hasbro's recent offerings which fell short or weren't what fans were looking for...likely one of the reasons Hasbro shelved o-ring for now.
It's like the Haslab, while $230 was economic friendly, most preferred to buy the classic one from the 80's in good condition instead of waiting months for the Haslab that was more expensive. Lots of people on this board bought some or all of the items offered. They were quite popular here despite the flaws. There was a lot of criticism after the fact, and the number of each item purchased per person was often low, but most people who replied were buying. With regard to the Haslab, *most* did not, in fact, express any desire to go buy the original because they couldn't wait for a Haslab. That may have been a vocal very few. "Most" of those who didn't buy it either had a Skystriker already, didn't want a Skystriker, or couldn't afford it. I've posted the timeline of events in here before and how things were received. You can blame Hasbro's poor execution and unrealistic expectations for the line's failure all you want, but the two things you described are just not how things played out.

230 isnt economically friendly. Isnt it 4x the price it was last released, and isnt that not that long ago?
Wehrmann explained it better. Hasbro goofed o-rings this time around |

While I haven't totally given up on Hasbro (Retroverse), I'm holding out hope that Super 7 still wants in on the o-ring business and that if Hasbro has truly called it quits they'll hand it over. |

Listen, when your goal is to exponentially increase profits while complaining about inflation but passing every cost to your consumer, it's not really indicative of great marketing strategy or acumen. I think once it became clear the market would only bear so many o-ring figures at $20 a piece, the writing was on the wall. Despite marketing to collectors now (a practice Hasbro has historically decried), they didn't bother to actually put any effort into what makes collecting fun or appealing. I can't speak for everyone, but I would say tracking down a vintage piece in excellent condition has a lot more appeal to a collector than buying an overpriced repro from an online store.

I totally agree with all the other comments that Hasbro used the same figures again that everyone already has. I personally would have welcomed a run of O13, and I'm sure most of you would have. But this was only half-hearted 40th anniversary effort. Whatever they gave us was mostly good, there's nothing but to enjoy it now. |

Woah, those are some rose-tinted glasses. The Skystriker had the community here absolutely screaming rip-off in late 2021.
I think there are enough O-Ring collectors, but more importantly MOTU Origins shows us there are enough consumers who can *become* collectors, provided the company puts effort into delivering the customers what they want. $42 2-packs of non-original paint app figures on flimsy cardboard with (sigh, fine, I'll admit) multilingual cardbacks, or packed into $70-90 cross-branded vehicles that never existed before was how they tried to re-enter the market. It does not appear to have succeeded, and mixed with the timing of plastic-free packaging, led to too much trouble for too little ROI. If there are too few O-Ring collectors, Hasbro could have changed that. They likely have not through their 2022 O-Ring strategy. On the broad subject of O-rings... This weekend I treated myself to some vintage O-ring figures for my birthday that I never had as a kid. Among them were Dusty V1 and Jinx V1. Both are in great shape with little to no paint wear, but...Dusty came with his rifle, and I want to put it in his hand, but it just wont fit with the force I'm willing to risk! And Jinx's joints are so tight that I fear moving them, especially since there's a "squeak" I'm not used to hearing when I do. I'd pay Hasbro good money for all-new versions if they'd make them! |

Is it like that today? I remember the NES and SNES Minis both sold out within hours back in 2017 when they came out and were insanely popular. Took me a while to snag them. The Genesis Mini was a lot easier to get though. I guess things may have changed a lot in the past few years. I still frequent a few retro gaming sites and they still get decent activity, but it's hard to know if it's niche or popular when you are part of that "niche" crowd.

As someone that never had a Skystriker, but had been looking for one on ebay in recent years, I jumped at the Haslab. To get a better version, that is brand new in box, with an extra figure, was a bargain compared to getting a complete, if yellowed, original version that probably wouldn't have the box and would be so fragile that breakage would not only be likely, but expected. The one that is really overpriced is the 30th anniversary version. It's not as good as the Haslab, doesn't have the box of the original, and has a fugly ME figure with it.
Nobody here knows what Hasbro's intentions with the o-ring line were, despite how much they may claim. For all we know they just planned to put out three 2 packs and a couple crossovers. I bought everything except the Mega-hiss and I'm more than happy with everything that I got. If they put out more, I'll buy it. If not, I'll buy some more vintage stuff. But I'd much rather have something new than old. The Stinger was perfect. The softer plastic was needed. I broke my Vamp mk 2 when I was a kid the first week I had it because the plastic was so brittle and I was so rough. |
