I do think a "made to order" with a set date isn't a bad idea. "Hey you want 340 Cobra Troopers? Sure preorders are open until X Date. Get them in and they are made to order. After that you just find them on the shelves." |

They may get the unlimited quantity of Stormtroopers and Cobra Infantry you can preorder right now on the date listed or they may not. Or they may get them in 12+ months. It's not an apples to apples comparison, and anyone who has dealt with them on these "fresh run" orders knows it.

RIGHT NOW Entertainment Earth has preorders up for 2 flavors of 3.75" Stormtrooper and the most recent Black series iteration (Mandalorian boxed). This is the fourth or fifth time I've seen the Rogue One flavor Stormtrooper made available again, at least the second or third on the Mando flavored version. And I know prior iterations of the Black Series Stormtrooper have been available off and on throughout the years.
For S&Gs, I put in 20 Stormtroopers in my cart for Entertainment Earth...and they clearly had NO issue with that. While Hasbro doesn't make some of this stuff available all year around, you CAN'T say they haven't made efforts to mitigate the issue. In terms of GI Joe, Hasbro is doing fresh runs of the ENTIRE LINE which are readily available for preorder RIGHT NOW for delivery between May and August. They do. Collectors are cheap, lazy and impatient. "Produce on demand" was done for the Regal Cobra Commander...and it was about 5 months between the end of the order period and delivery of product. As is, there remains an ENORMOUS fuss over the fact you can't walk into Walmart and find whatever you want right now. Can you imagine the irritation that some people might have to wait 6 months to get their toys? Hasbro IS making stuff available multiple times, but ultimately it IS up to you, the individual, to keep an eye open for this stuff. Online retailers have weekly newsletters and are MORE than happy to sell you toys. The ONLY thing I can't order anymore are the first iterations of the wave 1 Classified figures (who got replaced by the repaints which are readily available for preorder) I’m not a lazy collector- in fact, I feel like I spend more time than should be necessary to obtain products with a predetermined release schedule- and still come up empty more often than not. And if stores want me in store and not ordering online, they should go about having the product in their stores.

Is that why no one has issues with Target preorders? Why $20 figures are going for $100 on an aftermarket before they even hit general release?
I’m not a lazy collector- in fact, I feel like I spend more time than should be necessary to obtain products with a predetermined release schedule- and still come up empty more often than not. And if stores want me in store and not ordering online, they should go about having the product in their stores. My understanding is that the way they fill online (pre)orders is by taking from the inventory of stores that have them available...which means if any given store has already put them on shelves as soon as they came in and/or a collector or scalper or two got in that morning and wiped them out....well, suddenly there's no inventory to fill out preorders. It's ass-backwards and they need to fix it, but given their recent moves it seems they adamantly refuse to do so. Hasbro can't ship Target product they don't order/pay for, and new production runs take months at a minimum (see: about as long as the gap between the Cobra Trooper and Cobra Infantry...but actually probably even longer as the Cobra Infantry fig was probably planned even before the line started). They also can't make the exclusives available anywhere else without Target agreeing to it. So basically: Bitch at Target all you want, they deserve it (though it doesn't seem to be having the desired effect), but when it comes to the Target Exclusives there isn't jack Hasbro can do besides maybe offer slightly repainted versions in later waves. Or convince Target to do another run (rare, but occasionally happens). |

Then that’s stupid and also makes preorders pointless. It shouldn’t be a big ask to increase a production run of a product that hasn’t been released. Why am I ordering 6-12 months in advance if production is already set?

That’s how Flint and Lady Jaye are on tap for a July release, despite people already getting their orders from some locations: they sold well enough (via preorders) that Hasbro was able to get more in the pipeline to be available within a fairly short window of time. On top of that, again, Hasbro’s been more than willing to offer single figure cases to fan channels, all but eliminating the “short packed figure” issue for most mass retail collector lines. In terms of Target exclusives, I’ve seen enough become available after the fact (as well as stuff from Walgreens and Best Buy) to play the waiting game and see if fan channels get a redistribution or fresh production run.

Hasbro doesn't own the factories that make their product. They effectively rent time and manpower from them, and they get a set window for when their product will be made. Extending that window is not always possible if someone else has the next window lined up, or even if it's a Hasbro window, but for a product line that takes higher priority for whatever reason. You seem to think it's as simple as Hasbro snapping their fingers and product magically appears. It really, really isn't. And yes, Target preorders for any hot product are pretty useless, or at best a crapshoot. I explained in detail why that's Target's fault but you kind of seemed to ignore it. |

There are 3 Walmarts and 3 Targets in my county that I can do a quick circle in less than 2 hours. I do that circle more times a week that I like to admit. I look for things other than Joes and end up buying things other than Joes because the product isn’t there. Whether it’s the stores’ issue or Hasbro, that’s an argument I don’t care about.
I don’t expect to walk into a store and be able to find whatever I want. It would be nice to find something other than Jada metal figs. You can argue that the empty pegs are a good thing. I would argue that the “peg warming” Halo, Fortnite and HeMan figures that YouTube toy hunters scoff at are more successful because I see the stock rise and fall on the pegs. I’m an abnormal consumer who is having a hard time finding Joe stuff at retail. How will an average consumer ever find it? “Well actually, Hasbro’s business is to sell to retailers. Not consumers.” And that’s why Jazwares and Mattel are doing a better job because they’ve sold the idea to Target and Walmart to always stock figures. I see those figures every time I walk into the store. They may be ones I already have or don’t want, but they’re there. “No no no. The empty pegs and scarcity drive demand.” To buy product you can’t find? Ok. “You act like there’s magical formula that Hasbro can automatically predict demand and meet it.” No. But I definitely think they can do a better job. And if they choose to follow the “be happy you get anything at all” attitude many of its defenders take, then they’re failing at selling more to retailers. Which I’m told is supposed to be their business goal. Last edited by salty tbone; 04-18-2021 at 08:33 AM.. |
