So I?ve been doing some thinking, as I?ve been collecting regularly since 1985 without breaks. Is my hobby nostalgia if I?ve been doing it this long?
It?s been hard for me to relate to folks who are going ?oh, I gave it up and repurchased everything 20 years later? or some such, when this stuff has been a regular part of my life for so long. Don?t get me wrong, it hasn?t been my primary hobby this whole time, but the only time I sold anything off was when I decided that my Terror Drome, 1983 HQ, and TBP were poor display pieces and wasted too much space that I?d rather use for more succinct dioramas. It?s always been on display, wherever I was living at the time. Am I the only one feeling like this, or do some of y?all give this ?nostalgia? lens the side-eye like I do? |

I think that's called consistency. If you started collecting in 1985 with no breaks, I would call that consistency, or dedication. I think it's nostalgic when your collecting habits are focused on the connection of that particular time period. Like, do you collect because it reminds you and takes you back to when you were young?
I believe people who collect toys from the 80s and 90s based on how it makes them feel like a kid again, or reminds them of "the good ole days" are similar to those who gave it up back then to come back a revisit it 20 years later because it reminds them of when they were a kid. That, to me, would be nostalgic. In your case I would say, you never let go. Last edited by sbartek1974; 10-27-2022 at 11:21 AM.. |

Mine is partially nostalgia, but I find that my tastes have changed a lot. Certain figures I had as a kid I'm not collecting now, and figures I didn't care for back then are awesome to me now. Same goes for Star Wars, TMNT, Masters of the Universe, etc.
I guess, as a kid, you're just "all in" and will accept any new figure on the pegs. It's all good! As an adult you're more discriminating. |

I figure anything that "stamped" you as a child that you do now as an adult carries some nostalgia regardless of whether or not you ever stopped. You may have bought GI Joes consistently from childhood to adulthood, but a large part of the reason for that is the "love" you developed for that thing as a child. Many of us probably wouldn't be into GI Joe in the first place if it hadn't been a part of our childhoods. You carry those childhood memories forward with you into adulthood and they color and inform that thing to this day.
Now, there are degrees to it, as in anything. I'm pretty much all nostalgia, for example, because I don't care about toys in and of themselves outside of the brand they're attached to and the memories connected to them. In the pantheon of my interests, this stuff takes a backseat. In a very real way, it's something outside of my adult life. For me, this is about taking a break from adulthood, it's not a part of it. For others, it's about the toys themselves and very much a part of their adult life. Nostalgia plays a smaller role/matters less. Even there though, some nostalgia is baked in because it started in childhood and those happy memories from childhood are still a part of it.

I'm a lot like you in this regard Biz, and I completely relate to the question. My level of enthusiasm for, along with my willingness and ability to spend on GI Joe stuff has waxed and waned over the years, but at no point did I ever really stop and then start back up again. So it's hard to pinpoint the degree to which my relationship with the hobby is somehow straight-up nostalgia-based or not.
I really like Smoke's answer above. It's all a matter of degrees and given enough time with any hobby, nostalgia eventually plays a big part in it. I'm an avid NBA fan going back to my early childhood watching Magic, Kareem, and the Showtime Lakers with my grandpa. The players and jerseys have changed, the league has evolved, and my appreciation for how the game is played is a lot more nuanced today, but you could say that my love for the game is probably every bit as nostalgia-based as is my love for GI Joe.

I don't think consistency necessarily negates nostalgia, just as I don't think those of us that quit and came back were necessarily driven to do so by nostalgia.
I also agree with Smoke that there's a bit of nostalgia in pretty much any form of collecting. I think the question is whether one's collecting is nostalgia driven. I think if you long for the toys of yesteryear, that's nostalgia. The appeal of the retro lines are firmly in that catergory. I think if collecting is just something you like to do, and you have allowed your tastes therein to grow with you, it's not nostalgia driven. I also think I basically said the same thing Smoke just said

Good points about it being "somewhat" about nostalgia anyway, at least now. My collecting goals never really changed unless new product was introduced, but I think the point about sports is a good comparison.
At what point is it just part of your daily life, like anything else? I now associate this brand with many of the people I met in the hobby, and the fun experiences in collecting and sharing / discussing an interest with others as much as I do the toys. |

I'm more nostalgic about certain figures than I am about others. Darth Vader? Definitely nostalgic. Cobra Commander? Ditto. Moff Gideon? Not so much. It depends on the figure, but I've decided how I want to collect each line and I try to stick to that, for the sake of my finances. lol

It wasn't nostalgia that gave me the collecting bug. Like OP, I was a kid when I started "collecting," and I just focused on things I liked - Joes, Batman, Ghostbusters, wrestling....
Neca got a stranglehold on me for a few years, and I think nostalgia played a factor in that, but, then again, I've been obsessed with horror movies all my life, too, so I can't really say that my desire to own screen-accurate Freddy Krueger figures is driven by nostalgia. The VHS collection and the absolute insistence that every Friday be "VHS and Pizza Night" is 110% pure nostalgia. And I love it. And guess what? Only one more day 'til VHS and Pizza Night!!

If you were to suddenly be struck by total amnesia and, having no memory of or association with GI Joe at all, would still look at these figures and go "Yeah, I want that" then you might not be a nostalgia collector.
That's not me, but maybe someone out there feels that way. |
