While I am sure that is nice, we know that this does not guarantee that nice things get done. There are many fans of GI JOE within Hasbro's design and marketing department too but neat/cool ideas still get nixed regularly for business reasons. Even DePriest, who is a long-time collector and fan of GI JOE, will have no problem whatsoever taking the axe to any idea which does not fit within a current budget or current marketing paradigm. He has people to answer to.
In any case I think the problem lies more with the fans, the "I'll wait for Ross'ers" as I like to call them. Also, the fan gets tapped pretty hard by the GI JOE Collector's Club every year. I'd personally like to see the club drop the vehicle exclusives at the convention and leave that money to put toward a yearly Hasbro exclusive GI JOE vehicle or playset of some quality and size. Still, will GI JOE fans be forward-thinking enough to save money toward something like this? I see Joe fans talking about buying product from all kinds of other toy lines. Maybe the problem is that by the time something cool GI JOE-related get releases that there is no more discretionary income left to buy it, hence the dallying around hoping it'll go on clearance, which is obviously a shoot-oneself-in-the-foot approach the hobby over the long term. Everyone is pre-ordering a He-Man Castle Greyskull. Maybe instead that money should be going in the bank and we should all be waving it at Hasbro saying "GI JOE playset, please!"

For more on Mattel, take a look at the Green Lantern 3 3/4 inch movie line. Those figures could have been produced 30 years ago. Totally crappy product. Great to see Grayskull, though.

Look, the economic environment has changed. Inflation causes the value of your money to buy less of capital (raw materials and labor) that these products are made from, thus prices appear to "rise". Wages and standard of living in China are going up. Arguably, the consumer base for action figure toys is shrinking due to the popularity of personal electronics, video games, and the internet. However, the original spirit of this thread was not "why is everything so overpriced?" but "Why can Mattel do it for He-Man when Hasbro can't do it for GI JOE?". The answer is not in product pricing alone as pricing is usually relatively consistent across most product lines from most companies, relative to the economies of scale.

Just a quick look at wiki and there were only around 111 original figures (that number does not include She-Ra or characters in general) in the line compare that to GIJOEs over 500.
He-Man, no longer has a retail presence, it truly is kept going by fans and fans alone. If Mattel wants that line to continue, then they have to create things the fans want. That is their main customer base. Hasbro continually states that GIJOE is first and foremost a children's line and are at the mercy of the retailer. When GIJOE becomes a direct to consumer product like MOTUC, then you may see more things that are fan wants. You will also see a lot fewer.

Perhaps then you should not be buying toys?

Gi Joe "fans" don't deserve it, simple as that.

The same line that is only available from Mattycollector.com, and if it shows up anywhere else, usually at a $10-15 premium (before shipping) Seriously, how MOTUC is handled on Matty isn't at all terribly different than how the Club has run its FSS. This thread http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...rome-made.html Covers a LOT of the same general info as this. Long and short is: Hasbro doesn't feel the need to target this market like Mattel does, and their prior efforts at doing so (internet troop builders, DTC, Hall of HEroes, etc) have ALL flopped to a significant degree. MOTUC had 4 years of strong support as an online only, collector only line. GI Joe hasn't had 4 years of strong support as a damn RETAIL line. Quote:

Take a look at the new DC 4" figures they are offering. They are as articulated as most Joe or MU figures, have lots of detail and are priced about at the same point as a SDCC exclusive (2 for $30). Up to this point, Mattel has had real issues with a smaller line being made well - Green Lantern still peg warms! - but it looks like they are starting to move towards a new marketing strategy.
If Hasbro worked that way - producing premium 4" Joe figures with brand new molds and highly detailed for a higher price - that might be a way for them to get a hold on a better market, and get fans some of the figures that they long for - Pythona, Golobulus, etc.

Mattel's new Man of Steel line does show them taking the great step of adding eblows (single hinge) to their figures. What strides they are making :p
