Something occurred to me today, so I did a quick search to see if this has ever been mentioned before on the forums. I thought it was neat, but I’m one of the older dudes here, so this might not appeal to many of the younger collectors:
The 1983 Doc action figure had the mortar launched Mk 2 looking parachute illumination flare accessory and stretcher, but the right leg had a dark black painted/sculpted pistol holstered. In 2008, some 25 years later, “Operation: Rescue Doc” improved Doc with the G.I. Joe 25th Anniversary mail away exclusive figure. Added were a medical bag and a new curious item, an Easter Egg if you will, to replace the holstered pistol. On JBL, I think Justin Bell & Fred Meyer commented in a review that they didn’t quite understand it. Even less people noticed anything on hisstank with their reviews. Perhaps no review ever to date has ever explained this. So, in 2010 as a Toys ‘R Us exclusive, Doc returned, but without his trusty illumination flare mortar. The Easter Egg was back again, and should have been even more obvious to us, but still it wasn’t. Specifically, look at the small plastic silver painted flare pistol. Does it look a little strange for a modern action figure?. It should. It’s a WW2 British Molins No. 1 Mk. 5 signal pistol, made in 1:18 scale, but exact in sculpt to the Action Man and G.I. Joe flare pistols of the 1960’s and 1970’s. I forget how many dozen of these my G.I. Joes had back when I was a young boy, even if they were in a larger scale back then. Hasbro was essentially giving a nod or salute to the bygone days of the Action Sailor and Sea Adventurer figures, etc. And now you know… |

I believe it...considering the flare gun simply looks antiquated.

That's really cool! The original GI Joe was released before my time, so I'm not familiar at all with the 12" figures. But that's cool that Hasbro paid homage to the origins with this. I wonder if they've done it in other ways (i.e. besides the con set)?

Seeing as how the V.P. is such a V.I.P., shouldn't we keep the P.C. on the Q.T.? 'Cause if it leaks to the V.C. he could end up M.I.A., and then we'd all be put out in K.P. |
