I know this sounds like a silly question but why do they make peg warmers? When collectors see pictures of an upcoming wave we can all tell what figures are going to be the ones that no one will want. Even when you were a kid you knew that. Hasbro should know too. Shouldn't they?

Im thinking its like the average Music cd. there will be your great hits, your ok tracks, and the rest is filler.
in some cases, however, their plans backfire. ROC was a big mistake, as they thought joe collectors like army builders,a nd the movie was gonna take off, so the army builders and main characters would fly off the shelves. problem was: 1) the movie flopped with collectors 2) Retailers overordered the first waves and didnt order additional waves 3) overpricing ex: Arctic Destro isnt really a BAD figure, but its and "Off" figure for purists, collectors mostly would only buy one.. customizers can only do so much witht he character, and kids... because theirs no commercials for the figures, have no idea what it is... ...so he sits. lastly, sometimes one area's pegwarmer is another area's hot seller. ROC reaction armor figures DISSAPPEARED up her in New england, and were hard to finds. I didnt start seeing them again until TJX started selling them.

They don't. They release the figures hoping they'll be a hit, like the spiderman figs AFTER the movie is still hot in the theaters. Since they cater to everybody, and not just collectors, the company expects to sell its' figures to the kids who had just come from the theater and want, for example, the wall climbing spiderman so they can have it climb up their wall at home. And if a movie fails, so do the figure sales, like the Superman Returns figs.

It's not why do they make them it's why to they make so many of them.
I used to collect Spawn figures and at a certain point they figured it out... Female figure X1 "OK" figure X2 Coolest figures of the wave X3 Spawn went from having female figures become predictable pegwarmers to the most sought after figures, the first to go...make less...supply & demand.

Yeah, I don't think they necessarily mean to make a "pegwarmer", but some figures are just gonna be more popular than others. I think if they would revise the way they are distributed, then it would make a difference, but then again, I'm looking at this through the eyes of a collector. They have to take the entire population of toy-buyers into account.

One of the deciding factors in my area is me. I know that sounds like I have a very high opinion of myself, but I don't really. The reason I say this is because I can go to 4 different stores 50 times each and every time, they all have 10 of the same 3 figures. But as soon as I decide I want one of those particular figures, they seem to fly off the pegs and I can't find one anywhere. Makes no sense, but that's the way it is.

With ROC you have the problem of every movie toy line they are rushed out to cash in on said movie sadly movie toys rarely sell
R%OC was the exception thanks to the GI.JOE name. and as with all of Hasbro's lines they put out like 2 or 3 waves at once crowding the pegs and shortening the life of the product. Indiana jones is a prime example with the demand from collectors and the name boost that line could still be going strong BUT Hasbro put out every wave so fast (give people a chance to get 1 before 2 rolls out) and also killed their chances of seeing if the toys are selling or what works and whats not working. the same was done with ROC, IRONMAN etc, I think they may have seen the mistake, (thanks to retailers complaints) because now they are putting out small waves and giveing some time before the rush out ten more. the new THOR line has been put out and its just like POC a small assortment . less chance of peg warming peg warming is a result of over producing not so much popularity as people would like to think |
