Staff Edit Article in green below:
Hasbro's GI Joe action figure is turning out to be a real softy -- and that can't be good news for the toy maker. For starters, retail sales of the 45-year-old toy are weaker than expected, according to a research note released last week by Gerrick L. Johnson, the toy industry analyst at BMO Capital Markets. Johnson, citing observation and "sources in the toy industry," said sales are tracking "well below retail plans." "Should sales be significantly weak, clearance markdowns could also adversely affect margins," the analyst wrote. "With Street expectations seemingly high for Hasbro's toys-to-movies strategy, problems with GI Joe could adversely impact investors' perception of, or expectations for, Hasbro's overall strategy." Johnson has an underperform rating on the stock with a price target of $21. Hasbro closed Friday at $28.90. In addition, video-game bloggers have been gleeful in panning the sales results of the recently released game featuring the character. "GI Joe: The Rise of the Cobra" sold just 136,000 units in August, according to NPD Group, which tracked sales of the Aug. 3-released game. In contrast, "Batman: Arkham Asylum," released on Aug. 25, sold 593,000 units in just five days. Link to original article: NY Post - Hasbro's GI Joe a big sissy I am really sad to read this. I know it doesn't mean the toys are dead but they are not meeting expectations. I'm no expert on this stuff but i truly hope this doesn't hurt the future release of figures because i was so looking forward to the 2010 line. I was feeling pretty upbeat after reading about the sequel and seeing the movie get to almost 300 million. I just saw it today for a second time. I know there is a lot of hate for the movie but this i bad for the toy line and that sucks real bad. Anyone know anymore on this info, as to what it means to the future of the toyline? Thanks. After reading this again i see it's source seems a little vague. I hope we can get some better info on this like real sales stats. Last edited by kennywr22; 09-20-2009 at 10:08 PM.. |

Here's the article from the NY Post

How would clearance markdowns affect the margins at all? The store has already paid for the product. It's the store that takes the hit, not the distributor/manufacturer.
I just realized how, as I typed that. Still, discuss! |

really what do they expect when we are paying $9+ for a figure? Plus we've been spoiled with the 2 for $10 at least more than once and I'm sure everyone is waiting for the next one.

Anyone who cites "observations" and "sources in the toy industry" as the basis for their assertion is obviously trying to create a story where there isn't one.
I'm not sure why the NY Post is reporting on GI Joe toy sales to begin with, even in the business section. Aren't we supposed to be in a recession? Aside from adult collectors with disposable incomes, I'm not sure who isn't putting off their toy purchases until at least the holidays first, and prioritizing food and shelter. |

yeah, I don't know how they can expect profits to go up when they keep raising the prices. I think they are realizing that they have overstepped what we the consumer are willing to pay. In the end, its just a piece of plastic.
And I realize that it costs money to develop these toys, but with all the repaints, how much is it really costing them. Hasbro,.....lower your prices, we will buy more!!
