It's just a big honkin' laser cannon. It's definitely within the more sci-fi side of GI Joe, but I don't know that it's "silly". I think that's the main thing with sci-fi elements in GI Joe. It can be out there, or unrealistic, but if it's not designed or otherwise treated in a silly way, it works. Even Cobra-la, to some extent, works in this way, even though it is too far out there in fantasy for a lot of people. GI Joe, of course, was always a toy, but maybe the key - for me at least - was that, aesthetically (and in terms of the associated media), when they were "played straight" (in the comedy/acting sense of the phrase, to be clear!), it usually worked. I'm not sure I'm describing this right, but in my head, it's like when the aesthetics (or media) became too "toylike", instead of being a toy representation of a "realistic" thing, or at least something that was being treated in a realistic sort of way, it doesn't work as well. I know this is going to be interpreted in a way that's bound to get the usual "but toys are for kids" responses, but that's not exactly what I'm getting at... They don't have to be hyper-realistic depictions of real-life things/military/whatever - they just have to be TREATED as such. Does that make sense? The HAL looks like it could exist in the real world, whereas something like the Swampmasher, not so much. At any rate, I definitely want a Classified HAL. I wonder if they'd do it, though? I kind of feel like all the '82 vehicles are on the table, at this point.

I think the "silly" aspect is historically artillery cannons or missiles are to hit ground targets. A laser would never come down to hit the ground. Hence, the issue he might have. A laser is better suited for Anti-aircraft or close proximity anti-land vehicle (like a TOW missile) as it needs direct line of sight.

It's best not to think too heavily about the practical applications of the early RAH G.I. Joe vehicles and artillery. Cobra was originally a small terrorist organization and their early vehicles were a hang glider, a gyrocopter, and super-light tank. What exactly was G.I. Joe shooting down with the HAL, FLAK, Whirwind, or MMS? Even with the introduction of the Cobra Rattler in Year 3, a close air support vehicle, the Skystriker would have made it impossible to use without the element of surprise. G.I. Joe were given conventional full-scale warfare tools while Cobra were set up as hit and run terrorists.
But, these were toys and the goal was to put out cool military-style things that would inspire kids' imaginations and drive sales. It didn't need to make logical sense. As a grown-up, I sometimes muse a head-cannon where in 86 and after, Cobra has Serpentor and Cobra Island and are now functioning as a rogue state with its own standing military: the Viper Corps. It doesn't work precisely, but it does help me mentally explain some of the larger vehicles and changes the Cobra side saw in later years. Also, I simply love your cranium's canon for 1986+...its akin to my own, with a 'Genosha gains UN recognition from X-Men' type of pattern applied to Cobra Island. I believe the Marvel comics for ARAH explored this (I am somewhat of a novice to that Joe canon, but picked up the Cobra Civil War TPB and recall it referenced such). And yeah, to believe the Rattler (A-10 analogue) would ever have consistently dog fought with Skystrikers (F-14 analogue) is patently absurd on its face today - but it sure was fun when it occurred in Sunbow and was always enthralling for kid me! |

Drones with mirrors on them.. problem solved! Now we just need a drone pilot Joe that specifically lines up artillery style shots for the HAL.
Could use Bank Shot for this purpose (RIP). Think of the catch phrases! "I'm about to get HAL up in your business". "take a good look in the mirror, it'll be your last", "trouble with the curve?", "time to reflect on your choices in life" For the record I know I'm lame.. just saying.. sillier things have happened in GI Joe. I was not a popular child.. I am not a popular adult.. lol

Popularity is overrated. Anyways, it is about belonging and not fitting in . . . You had me chuckling so thanks for this. Plus, you are not wrong, even if, you are a lot. Your theory could work. Mainframe can position drones and mirrors with his luggage. Upgrade achieved.
